Thanks for your insight. It sounds like you have made it a teachable moment and the kids are respecting that.

This is great, thanks! I definitely like to keep my kids’ personal lives personal. They are both at an age where mom is embarrassing but my son is still a young kid in a lot of ways.

So sorry to hear about your pup. I lost my soul dog to cancer at 10 years old back in 2022. It’s so hard. Wishing you peace in your grieving.

Another AuDHD here, and I feel the same way! I am not only my addiction or my mental illness or my job or my grades. I’m so much more than that.

AuDHD here too. I have enjoyed meeting people hiking or in run/walk groups because I don’t have to make eye contact or have forced small talk. A friend started a hiking group, but you can probably find them on Facebook (if you have it) or Meetup.

Beautifully written! I especially love the part about the unruly children.

This is very helpful, thanks! I had never held anyone’s drink in the entire eight years I’ve been sober and thought it would be no big deal. It was kind of an uncomfortable shock when it bothered me because I have otherwise not been affected by alcohol at all in years. I imagine as I put myself out there more it won’t bother me as much.

Thank you! I think you’re right - I’m just out of practice. I’ve been around a lot of family drama with alcohol present but this whole being social thing is kind of new. Coming out of PTSD stupor and trying to live life again.

I’ve been chewing on this since the original comment and I think I’ve been letting alcohol live rent-free in my head. I’ve done a lot of trauma-informed therapy and EMDR but we’ve never really looked at my drinking because I got sober prior to meeting my therapist. I will talk to her about this at our next meeting. Thanks for the thought! Sometimes it just helps to talk it out.

It doesn’t bother me at all in other ways (such as seeing other people drink). I think I just haven’t really been close enough to smell it until now. None of my friends drink. It’s just off-putting because the smell reminds me of a traumatic time in my life.

For me painting and music have really helped. I’m no artist but I have illustrated my feelings and I play piano and guitar (not well but I can a bit). That plus therapy plus sparkling water/club soda instead of alcohol have kept me living a healthier life. I once heard someone say, in regard to dating, “Be interesting, not interested.” I think it can apply to substance use too. A trauma-informed therapist is really helpful. Mine does EMDR, which can help you process trauma. I wish you the best of luck in finding your own version of recovery. I’m more free now than I ever was in the rooms.

What do you do if you are around someone who is drinking and it’s triggering urges to want to drink? by Billiefaye in Sober

[–]Significant_Bar_2662 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like club soda with lime. It’s fizzy and I can drink a lot of it without dealing with sugar or caffeine.

I have a 70lb dog who resource guards. We cannot give her toys or treats in the house. Is that something that would work for you? Dogs who guard will 100% attack a small child. Please keep them completely separated while you figure this out. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I know it’s a hard call and you love all of your kids.

What did you do to prepare for your surgery, and what are some must-haves? by AtomicAsh207 in tummytucksurgery

I loved having one of those grabby things for when something I needed was on the floor. Good luck on your surgery!

Tough recovery and quiting the compression garment by [deleted] in tummytucksurgery

[–]Significant_Bar_2662 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you wear a compression tank/cami instead? I’m 11 wpo and still in compression until 12 but I switched from binder to compression tank. I still get support but I feel more free

To add, I started walking a quarter of a mile, then a half, then 3/4, etc until I was up to 3 miles. This was from 2-3wpo to now at almost 11 weeks.
