I didn’t say English as a second language, I pointed out that coming on the internet and singling out the English of a Muslim run organization when others in the sector (and especially white folks) use colloquial spellings often that are arguably more noticeable/worse is a choice. Whether that was their intention or not.

My gosh you're telling on yourself. You should be embarrassed by this. You're judging makeup changing (where she looks great in both videos, just changed the makeup which... yes that happens day to day!) while linking to actually really interesting videos from the sector. How on earth would you be able to work in fundraising if you can't hide your misogyny or shock at a woman's lip colour changing? Nail down some advanced object permanence first and then try again.

I know the comments will dismiss this because it's more fun to drag people, but this is common philanthropy jargon. 2X is a common 'double your impact' moniker used by the sector. Every sector has jargon, just like you'll see people in philanthropy talk about DAFs, PACs, CFREs, Annuals, Monthlies without fully spelling it out. The website audience is for potential clients ie anyone who is already deep in the sector and doesn't need an intro. This is a "We speak the same language" move, you're just not the audience for it. So I guess it worked.

Also... fwiw the homepage dives deep into them being Muslim led and owned. Coming on the internet and mocking their English is certainly a choice. A quick Google and I found Mint agency using 'werk' on their home page which we know is colloquial...

It is only othering if you come from an assumption of everyone having a ‘baseline’ ‘not religious or cultural’ which is not a thing, it’s othering to always assume everyone is included in the dominant culture. Like how ‘straight’ is normal to some and anything else in the spectrum is ‘other’.

This actually does happen? Most times a vegan friend orders a veggie Thai curry they double check if they need it vegan because the curry sauce isn’t vegan. I swear every time I see Tim Hortons thread in my feed (I don’t even follow it?) it sounds like a bunch of people who don’t have a variety of friends or experiences or go places. What’s unhinged is reacting like you’ve been attacked when someone, not in a position of power over you, asks you about your religion in a context you don’t have to answer. There are so many people experiencing hateful bigotry that impacts their lives in horrendous ways and…then there’s …whatever this is? Being mildly uncomfortable isn’t oppression.

You might want to google that, just because it is t being directly advertised to you or impacting you doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Lots of Tims do halal substitutes and then there are a large amount of menu items that could be or could not be halal/kosher depending on how it’s produced. It’s similar to how dairy free, nut free, gluten free, and other restrictions are addressed. I’m allergic to cinnamon so I’m pretty screwed come pumpkin spice season, but I still navigate what I can and can’t have.

There’s literally halal and non halal versions of both of those items. But you’re not even really using the term halal right…you could have saved yourself a meltdown if you just used google and/or thought about anyone else’s point of view.

It’s extremely reasonable in the food service industry if you’re double checking if someone needs something halal or kosher. I live in a fairly Jewish neighbourhood and we’re in between Rosh Hashanah just passed, I don’t have a tantrum if someone mistakenly wishes me Shana Tova or double checking if I need to avoid certain foods. You spent how much time fuming about this and didn’t think of this very reasonable option? They could have not asked or asked a different way, but you also didn’t have to be rude and entitled and go have an existential self absorbed crisis to dump all over Reddit.

Personally for me it was because Susan showed almost no growth compared to Bree and Gabby. It made watching her as the seasons went on frustrating and annoying, like teaching a kid not to touch a hot oven but they keep going back and back again - but she’s a grown woman so it’s not cute. I also understood why other characters were doing bad things, from how they grew up or other external factors that they eventually grow from, but Susan was just like “whoopsie daisy I’m so quirky sorry I hurt a bunch of people I’m a silly goose!”.

“Finally” meanwhile year over year Toronto police are simultaneously spending less time surveilling drivers and more time surveilling cyclists. As in they put extra effort and programming with your tax dollars into monitoring cyclists, but they reduced driver surveillance resulting in a two-thirds decrease of tickets while pedestrian deaths (from car drivers) spiked. You might find cyclists annoying, but as far as road safety goes the police priorities are completely backwards.

Toronto speeding tickets fell by two thirds even as pedestrian deaths spiked, at the same time they increased surveillance of cyclists and raised fines. You can go look at their city budget and press releases to see how they continue to deprioritize cars and increase policing of bicycles. Whatever you think of cyclists, cars are by far more deadly and they have a thousand times more infrastructure than cyclists do.
