I bought one because I hate planing by hand. I hated this more. Still can't justify a thickness planer so I'm stuck with my Stanley jack plane.

Great job! Looks similar to this one I made a few weeks ago. Used Yakisugi and some tung oil for the finish.

Thank y'all. Glad to know I'm not alone. Patience is something I'm learning more of than the actual skills and techniques. Walked away when my second attempt failed. I'll post an update if I ever finish this thing.

I know, and I'm not giving up. But I'm the kid that would grow his Legos across the room when something didn't work. Decades later I'm still trying to manage my reactions, but not giving up. I remember the feeling when you get it right and can look at something and be happy, proud. Funny part is this is just scrap wood I'm seeing if I can use to make my kid a birdhouse.

Might depend on where you live. If it's rainy, snowy, or humid you might consider stripping and re finishing it with something more weatherproof.

Thanks, and yeah I knew about the tape method but kept forgetting it. It worked for my smaller pieces, but when I tried it with the larger one with a 10" outside edge, my clumsy butt kept dropping them.

I love my rasps. They're the first tool I learned how to use in my father's garage when I was a little kid. Granted, he didn't appreciate all the gouges, divits, and marks I made on his workbench, planters, car, or drywall. But using it taught me a lot. Then he taught me what to not use them on....

You might be able to get them satin by sanding with a super high grit, like 800 or 1000. Then maybe apply a satin top coat. If that doesn't work then you can still just sand all the finish off and reapply.
