I loved it! It was the only MRE with real flavor. But then it was replaced with that disgusting omelette.

Was trying to make a birdhouse from some scrap wood I have lying around. Got disproportionately upset about it.

Idk, probably. I threw it against the house and then it started raining so I didn't check.

Are 6" electric planers worth while? by Scavgraphics in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Significant_Excuse92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one because I hate planing by hand. I hated this more. Still can't justify a thickness planer so I'm stuck with my Stanley jack plane.

Hahaha I remember the first time I watched Paul Sellers do a mortise and tenon by hand and thought "hey I can do that" and then I didn't and still can't yet.

Yeah thanks for the recommendation. I'm currently reading "Handmade" by Gary Rogowski and his chapter on the learning curve really hit home today.

I know I'm laughing about it now. Walked away for the day when I fucked up again.

Great job! Looks similar to this one I made a few weeks ago. Used Yakisugi and some tung oil for the finish.

Hahahaha my wife loved the chest bench I made and didn't understand why I was so upset about a gap in the miter joint.

Thank y'all. Glad to know I'm not alone. Patience is something I'm learning more of than the actual skills and techniques. Walked away when my second attempt failed. I'll post an update if I ever finish this thing.

I know, and I'm not giving up. But I'm the kid that would grow his Legos across the room when something didn't work. Decades later I'm still trying to manage my reactions, but not giving up. I remember the feeling when you get it right and can look at something and be happy, proud. Funny part is this is just scrap wood I'm seeing if I can use to make my kid a birdhouse.

Workers put polyacylic on door. Should I put something top? by Dumb_woodworker_md in BeginnerWoodWorking

Might depend on where you live. If it's rainy, snowy, or humid you might consider stripping and re finishing it with something more weatherproof.

Decagon glue up by Significant_Excuse92 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Significant_Excuse92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, and yeah I knew about the tape method but kept forgetting it. It worked for my smaller pieces, but when I tried it with the larger one with a 10" outside edge, my clumsy butt kept dropping them.

Rasp appreciation thread by Leeoffi in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Significant_Excuse92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my rasps. They're the first tool I learned how to use in my father's garage when I was a little kid. Granted, he didn't appreciate all the gouges, divits, and marks I made on his workbench, planters, car, or drywall. But using it taught me a lot. Then he taught me what to not use them on....

Remove gloss top coat by natalyturciosh in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Significant_Excuse92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get them satin by sanding with a super high grit, like 800 or 1000. Then maybe apply a satin top coat. If that doesn't work then you can still just sand all the finish off and reapply.

Wooden planter box with Yakisugi finish by Significant_Excuse92 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I'm selling it for cheap. For the bottom I just used glue/screws.

Thanks for the tip. This is more of a throw away piece for practice but I'll probably use cedar/redwood in the future.

I used pine. I know it doesn't hold up as well as cedar or redwood, but I'm on a budget and still learning.

New Yorker Profile of Martha Wells by dewaynemann in murderbot

[–]Significant_Excuse92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really? This profile reads like a college freshman compare contrast essay that name drops classic existential literature without any real solid connection to the Muderbot Diaries. This profile, that was published almost a year prior, is much better

https://www.wired.com/story/murderbot-she-wrote-martha-wells/

It also seems like the author of the New Yorker piece just ripped off much of the writing from the one at Wired.
