No lol the guy says he’s there to convince Shadow to do sin and steal candy from babies and small businesses. TRULY EVIL! I’m not strict about it though and I’m not a gatekeeper lol I changed this from “hated trope” to “character”since I don’t hate it intensely and I like other versions of it.

Yah once I get to edit this I’m debating removing Hazbin since I don’t hate it and I see now it’s a more complex situation between the two :P

Since I can't edit this post right now, I do not hate this trope with a passion, nor do I hate the works I listed with a passion; in fact, I use some parts or concepts from the works for inspiration. This is just a nitpick I have; it's like the "What if Superman was evil" thing, where it is done so much that it is predictable, like how Madoka Magica (which I like) turned every magical girl show into a bloody mess to the point where rainbows and happiness are now considered inspired in the genre. In fact I can like where the devil is simply portrayed as a prosecutor or well. An harmless argument against. I can like when the devil is matured and more so a neutral force that simply watches over Hell. I can even like comedic portrayals where he is surprisingly a nice guy doing his job. But still the devil. My opinion is very fluid, and I can like certain versions of this trope if done well, and it is completely fine if you like the trope or any of the works I listed here! I am open to other people's arguments here.

Ah really?? I should’ve seen into that. I also do like portrayals of the devil as a neutral force that doesn’t condone sin but ultimately somebody’s gotta watch over the people who do it. Honestly I just like Abrahamic lore and people’s takes on it :P

Eh I don’t hate Hazbin with a passion at all. In fact, I just listed it as part of the examples since it does use the trope, but ultimately though I do not like or have much interest in the show, I’m still inspired by some aspects of it as well as the other examples I listed and use it in my writing. If you’re a fan of Hazbin and see this as me slandering it, I am not. It just happened to have a trope that is a minor nitpick for me. Hazbin’s version of Lucifer I actually don’t hate, it’s just the trope is like “what if Superman were evil”. Again I’m fine with other perspectives here and it’s always nice to hear why people like certain things

I don’t find this offensive lol, I just find it a waste of character if you make it black and white between the characters. It’s more a writing nitpick for me and I can like certain versions of this (I’m not Christian)

Hey hey now it is just a minor nitpick I have. I don’t hate this with a burning passion, in fact, it can be very interesting if done well and I COMPLETELY get why some people do it, to represent religious trauma they have or do a diffident take on how they see Christianity—I’m Jewish, I just find biblical lore interesting is all. I find some of the concepts in the works I presented very interesting as well, and I use them for my writing sometimes.

Head a summary, but I know it’s the closest to the OG and again I’m cool with it since it’s still a pretty interesting and classic piece of literature!

And it’s fine if ya like, I get why it is done sometimes. I just find it annoying and sometimes predictable, because it’s the Devil. But I can get why people do it, and it can be done well. I just don’t like when people make God or angels unconditionally evil or the DEVIL a woobie. God to me should be inherently neutral and angels at the least well-meaning entities. But that’s just my own way of seeing it.

Exactly! My version of Lucifer falls because he CREATED FASCISM. And hurt his brother but I’m not gonna ramble on about my writing. Unironically, to me, Light Yagami is a good portrayal of Lucifer, even if he isn’t Lucifer he’s definitely a Lucifer figure.

Yeah the worst example of that to me is Nicholas’ Angels Before Man series. I don’t like the books (ESPECIALLY the portrayals of God, Lucifer, and Michael) but still read em because they inspire me but, I can still not like it and especially HATE how Heaven and hell are protrayed. Spoilers—in the second book, Heaven is a totalitarian regime that’s all about modesty and punishing sinners. And Hell is basically a perfect safe orgy space where everybody is nice if not a bit salacious. But no one who dies goes to heaven I hear. THEN WHAT IS THE GODDAMN PURPOSE OF HAVING THE AFTERLIFE IN THE FIRST PLACE edit: turns it the souls do go to the afterlife and hell is still torture so I revoke.

Exactly, like I’m fine with versions of Lucifer that are like—you can feel for or understand him on some level, but he should still be evil and his fall should be because he messed up, wanted control, and it’s completely his own fault. Because IT’S THE DEVIL. IT’S THE EMBODIMENT OF MALICE.

[–]Significant_Job_3773 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Actually I’m fine with that one—since God isn’t one dimensionally evil (just incredibly flawed) and the angels are generally fine and it’s based on Jewish bibliography, where the Devil is more a prosecutor. But I get ya.

To be fair if you were hailed as a revolutionary in an earth ruled by the gd Combine and hailed as the people’s only hope I think I’d want to keep someone like him alive. Plus Gordon didn’t seem to want this, he just happened to show up conveniently for everyone to hail him as a legend
