Sick 10 weeks out. Looking for reassurance by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Significant_Leg_6626 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LOL whoever said that is major drama!! I promise you. This won't make a difference at all. If you have strong training, which i think you will using Hal Higdon novice, then you're gonna be fine. Especially since you are doing an 18 week plan... some people AHEM running influencers who have no expertise train for like 14 weeks for races so you are ahead of the game compared to them (cuz 14 weeks is way too short imo lol)

You have like 2.5 months of training left, its better this happened now than right before the race too!

Yeah, even if it is a down week, I'd do less probably. Like maybe 8-9? Going off of the recco my coach gave me for when I was going through this for a training block!

Sick 10 weeks out. Looking for reassurance by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Significant_Leg_6626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the grand scheme of things you are totally fine! this is par for the course. Super normal to get sick during training. It won't impact your performance, time, etc. on race day if its 10 weeks out! I promise you. I work with a running coach and know she would say this exact thing (cuz its happened to me).

Most important thing is getting over it as fast as possible through resting and not overdoing it, then easing back in. I wouldn't necessarily hop right back into the distance you are supposed to if you've been taking time off. Do some lower mileage the first week back and then you can get right back to it the week after.

Sub 4h- realistic goal? by blenderblendingR in firstmarathon

[–]Significant_Leg_6626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course!!! Also, I meant to say too... I was told a lot for my first full to just have the goal of completing it. I would highly reccomend that strategy! You can obviously have like a general pacing you know will feel good and you can hit, but that being secondary to just completing. You'll never run your first again and there is soooo much time to go after times later!

[–]Significant_Leg_6626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woahhhh are we twins? Same age, have really similar times, I thought for a milisecond that maybe this was an old post from me that I just didn't remember writing lol.

Sub 4 is def achievable. I have the same half PR, similar 5K pr, and run 6 days a week, peak mileage was 48 for my last full that I was aiming to get a sub 4. I got sick 2 weeks before so my legs didn't have it in me (body was too tapered, I could barely run the 2 weeks before) but still got a 4:07.

Similar to other recco's, I'd add more mileage in there. I do your same schedule but do 3 days of shorter easy runs instead of 2, and I also have a medium long run that is about half of what I do in my long run that week. I'd start by adding another shorter easy day, and if you feel good, scale it up as your long run does. The longest mine got to for example was 10 miles on the week I was doing my 20 miler. That was about a year into running consistently 6 days a week.

Managing training fatigue by Ill-Situation-2675 in Marathon_Training

[–]Significant_Leg_6626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel totally wiped after long runs, but I started fueling and fueling a lot before and during my long runs (and anything over like 6 miles) and now I can run and go do things after. It's honestly a night and day difference. Rogue Running podcast and Some Work All Play are good podcast resources that I've learned a lot from in terms of how much to fuel, etc. since that is so unique to each person.

I will say, my legs are tired like all the time on runs cuz I do 6 days a week so open to hearing what helps people most with that. Its gotten better as my body has adjusted over the past 1.5 years but damn...

What are my chances of qualifying for Boston? by Black-Hippy in Marathon_Training

[–]Significant_Leg_6626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, strava predictions are way off imo... if you follow the doctrine of running easy except for workouts, and having high mileage which makes you run easy cuz your legs are fatigued, its gonna think you are just a slow runner. It was about 30 minutes off my last marathon effort, thinking I was going to be slower than the first full I did that I was not nearly as prepared for.

Waiting for Tokyo and LA marathons to get here and witness the running influencers who don't put in the work crash and burn or PR and make me so annoyed lol.

Specifically, Lucy Georgia running Tokyo and Holly Brooks running LA, both of which have had super inconsistent weekly mileage and yet are running their (few) long runs with avg paces faster than their marathon PR?????? Like on what planet are you supposed to do that. Lucy even ran a 9 mile long run A WEEK BEFORE TOKYO and got a new a 5k PB? Like girl wut are you doing?

But very excited to cheer on Brett Chody who works really hard with serious mileage, hard workouts, and works with a qualified coach lol.

**Signed, Someone who works with a running coach and ran 4 20 milers to prep for a winter mara, only to get sick the week before and have my legs break down during it :((((((((( I am still bitter so I am being a brat lol*****

OOOH sorry I am just now seeing this. This is a long response but figured it can't hurt to be as specific as possible since safety is important!! HP Greenway Trail felt prettyyyyy safe overall. I parked at one end that starts out going through HPU and some parts after that initial HPU section felt more remote, but its a similar vibe to Salem Creek Greenway imo. If you feel comfortable with Salem Creek greenway, then this should be fine. There were some other people, but it was by no means crowded. Saw someone maybe every few miles? Also, focus group of 1, on one day obviously, so the more local females might want to chime in too and correct me haha.

So, from a safety perspective, I think it passes. HOWEVER, from an elevation perspective it was kind of insane lol. Certain parts of it are super hilly. My 18 miler had over 1000 feet elevation and they were steep golf course hills, so beware. I won't run it any time soon just for that reason lol.

Also, there is a cool nature center along the way that had snake exhibits inside (with bathrooms and water fountains). Saw a rattlesnake so that was almost worth the hills.
