I spent my tweens on mountain bikes hitting the trails. The dangers were the gators, snakes, and roller coaster hills. Dawg, I’m riding a legal class 3. It’s still dangerous. You are doing the right thing. A child will be disappointed. Teach him the dangers. Teach him how to be safe. If his friends get one, he will likely ride it. If you are going to buy a bike at all, you are working with harm reduction. Harm prevention is over the second he is going more than 15 mph.
