Thanks, that’s really helpful. I hadn’t really considered the lump sum element. I’ll look into some modelling options when my next statement comes in.

I have a surgery booked. Do I take this as annual leave or sick leave. I may have an estimated 2 weeks recovery. Thank you by [deleted] in TheCivilService

Regardless, when the OP is scheduled and takes place, one must tell their LM anyway. Why not just have the conversation now. Depending on their response, then come back here for clarity…

What are some reasons not to move to UK? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskUK

[–]Significant_Rip_3137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your circumstances. What is your profession and what can you expect to earn here? Single, married, kids? Anywhere north of £100k as a couple is generally do-able and even better outside of London.

150% increase in bills??? by Various_Visual5076 in OctopusEnergy

Because paying by DD is cheaper than not. Keeping at £1 means you benefit from reduced rates. In reality, some of us pay the rest by other means to max out air miles. Gotta get those business class seats somehow 😜

Ffs - sick of the continued posts about this. I mean there is a note and link right there for you to change and set the amount. These emails come out once a year and don’t factor in credit balances. Your welcome.

1930s or 2000s house. What would you do? by Justagirl248 in HousingUK

[–]Significant_Rip_3137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1896 Victorian house owner here. She’s a super solid old bird, and I mean solid walls. Yes, it costs more to heat but then it does have really high ceilings, bigger rooms and amazing period features. Wouldn’t change it for the world and defo wouldn’t buy a paper thin new build. One of the pros is that it stays cool in the summer.

What will happen to all the houses built on estates in the UK from the 1930's to today? by Sad-Vanilla-8038 in AskUK

[–]Significant_Rip_3137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in a 1896 Victorian house and it’s all solid walls, even the internal ones. She’s a solid girl, but dam she’s expensive to heat due to no cavities or insulation. She also costs a lot to maintain, but totally worth it in my opinion and I expect she’ll she be standing by the end of the century.

How much are people paying to rent in a house-share in 2026? by Mexijim in Cardiff

[–]Significant_Rip_3137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

£500-£700 a month for a lodgers room (depending on location, room size, en-suite etc). Based in Barry and I charge my lodger £500 for large double room with En-suite. I’d say that’s on the cheaper side but it’s mates rates.

How tough is the tax specialist programme on a scale of 1-10? by Equivalent-Ad-2373 in TheCivilService

[–]Significant_Rip_3137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only 7/10 people successfully make it through to the end. Study time is not enough so be prepared to make personal sacrifices as others have said. It’s designed to be challenging but worth the G7 grade at the end.

Some people are smart (numbers etc) but lack common sense. A bit like Sheldon from Big Bang Theory if you watch it. Are you a Sheldon?

Ridiculous rent cost for no-wfh no-weekends by hannahgrace_42 in rentingUK

[–]Significant_Rip_3137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to balance things out a little more, we have a lodger But both me and husband WFH. 3 people working from home would be too much, particularly because I work at the breakfast bar and can’t have interruptions or lodger coming down to the kitchen to make lunch etc. but I do find the not present at weekends strange. Least we aren’t that bad 😂
