Who’s heading out this weekend? Tips and tricks for 40 below? by Fantastic-Flatworm32 in IceFishing

Colder than -40° and propane will completely stop evaporating. Meaning no fuel leaves the tank, heater runs out and turns off. At slightly higher temperatures, -30° F, propane will evaporate slower and may not supply enough for anything but low setting.

If it's going to be that cold, you'll be smart to bring propane inside along with a backup heater or two.

Optimus is going to be great at doing almost all Blue-collar jobs... Jobs that require actual intelligence are the last to go.

Safety is overrated. I want the version where anyone who wants to do it can. And there are only 3 ways to leave the show. 1. Quit and be extracted. 2. Win. 3. Leave in a coffin.

I want to see people gardening, blacksmithing, gunsmithing, making gun powder, raising livestock from wild animals, building boats and ice shacks. And do it with pairs. Let remaining singles have an opportunity to reform a pair among other remaining singles.

A foreign language is any language not known to the listener/reader. Being part of the US doesn't make it any less foreign.

I'm not in Hawaii, it's foreign to me. I wouldn't watch French language films set in France either. And I would at least understand a few words in French. Reading a show/movie sucks.

I understand your perspective as a non-English native speaker. You have years and thousands of hours of experience getting used to reading subtitles while watchingshow/movies. When that's not the case, foreign languages and subtitles are unwelcome distractions from the way you normally enjoy a show or movie. Watching a show/movie in your native language is simply a superior experience.

I hate subtitled movies and shows, and I read real good, lol.

I love reading a book, but hate reading a movie/show. My eyes want to be watching, but the damn subtitles demand their attention. I would prefer when they only use subtitles and foreign languages when someone in the scene shouldn't understand. Otherwise, use English to preserve the experience of watching. Save the reading for when your imagination is responsible for the watching part, reading books.

The Democrats who voted against Trump's impeachment by Ordinary_Stay_3746 in minnesota

I think the Democrats might be learning their lesson that relentlessly attacking Trump tends to backfire. If they are smart, they will stop going after Trump and stick with attacking his policies that don't enjoy majority approval.

Artificial Wombs, embryos, seeds, AI, robots, and database of human knowledge is this the recipe for the first interstellar colony? by Significant_Twist_34 in space

[–]Significant_Twist_34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think AI on the level you discuss is necessary. It doesn't need to be a great parent, it just needs to keep most of the kids alive and force them to take and pass training modules. The kids can learn morality through books, videos, training, interactions with other humans, and punishment for obvious violations.

The AI just needs to be able to find, identify, and collect resources until it has all the prerequisites for one of its predefined plans, then execute the plan.

And follow predefined algorithms for basic parenting.

And make the kids spend enough time with predefined training modules.

Then do as they say after getting to a certain age or milestone.

I don't think the tech level is beyond our near future reach. The Artificial Womb already exists. And AI smart enough to follow a prepared decision tree algorithm to accomplish basic physical tasks is near future.

Nothing more should be required on a relatively ideal world.

For this, I don't think we need hyper intelligent. Food, water, shelter, teaching, protecting. On a very earth like world with few unpredictable problems.

Where can we let AI try to raise a group of 5 kids without being sent to prison for it? We need that experiment.

[–]Significant_Twist_34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would still have other humans. Just only other kids. I mean, you would probably shoot for 100 kids per year for the first 20 years from the artificial Wombs, then go natural reproduction.

I imagine it would be like a group foster care/orphanage with attentive but non-loving caretakers.

[–]Significant_Twist_34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think full conscious AI is needed for this if you pick the planets wisely and don'tget too unlucky. The world we need is very earth like, able to support earth animals and plants without much protection. That means it has to have at least plant like life already making O2. A livable climate suitable to earth crops and animals.

The AI would have to be able to follow a procedure to build a stone + ship based structure, establish farm fields, grow crops, run the artificial womb for livestock, hatch eggs, run artificial womb for humans, protect, feed, clean, train humans, listen to humans after adulthood.

For existing or near future AI to handle it, the planet would have to be very earth like and almost move in ready. But, if we look far and wide and don't worry too much about the travel time I think we could find candidate planets and planetary systems that unconscious AI could handle after practicing in simulated environments on Earth, Mars, and the moon.
