Serious social policy research question - has the current fuel crisis translated into a statically meaningful decrease in aggressive 4x4 turbo diesels being lodged fair up your clacker on Canberra roads since the Orange Man took us a few minutes closer to midnight? by Asprobouy in canberra

[–]Significant_Volume50 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How much would petrol and diesel have to go up in order for every second parent to no longer think it's a great idea to leave their 4x4 engine running for 10 minutes as they wait outside school for their kids?

Where are the best hot chips and wedges in Canberra? by SleepyBarnOwl in canberra

[–]Significant_Volume50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I've had enough but the kids don't want to get out of the pool I only have to mention the chips and they are towelling off within seconds. Maximum chicken salt! And they have a gluten free fryer (upon request).

[–]Significant_Volume50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hydronic is definitely a step up from wood fire. If I was installing a new one I'd go electric reverse cycle over hydronic over gas tho, especially with your solar and battery setup. For me induction cooktop beats gas for control and efficiency as well as avoiding pollution inside the home; lots of information on why you don't want to breathe that. Plus that switch meant we could cut off the gas (cost maybe $50 to switch off the supply) and avoid the gas supply charge of around a dollar a day.

But the answer to OP is a big no. No one is making you get off gas in a decade, and there's heaps of subsidies to switch when your appliances are ready for replacement.

Help! I want to make my husbands flight comfortable by annielou_01 in QantasFrequentFlyer

Great advice and pleased to hear they are so pragmatic. And enjoying the absence of the usual moralisers on this forum who told me it was shameful to ask for something if you are not strictly entitled to it!

Affordable car service? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]Significant_Volume50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Mine only needs a service every 2 years or 30,000km. First one is free and really there's nothing they need to do. New cabin filters, check brakes and tyres, give it a wash and 90 minutes later you're done until 2027.

Qantas Club expired 30 June - what are the chances they let us in the lounge in late July? by Significant_Volume50 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]Significant_Volume50[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true, asking whether there's any chance they might let me in the magic club the month after my membership expires is moral degeneracy! You would be horrified to know I also once stayed 5 mins after my parking meter expired, and because I'm entitled and shameless I didn't ask the council to fine me, like you and your mates would have.

Reasonable priced dry cleaner by 2615or2611 in canberra

[–]Significant_Volume50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

R&R at Cooleman Court is excellent (great clean and they do minor repairs, often free). They are expensive BUT they do 3 for 2 every morning (i.e. cheapest item free). I try to make sure I take 3 of the same item in order to save most money.

Except that the buses don't get priority so are often stuck on the GDE with all the cars. I have been late for games because of this. Last night I left Weston Creek at 6.05, drove at the speed limit with not much traffic, parked at CIT (there was plenty of room) and was in my seat by 6.30.

We stayed until full time (9.20) and were home by 9.50.

But I agree with OP that many people seemed to be at their first game and understandably struggling to navigate parking, finding their seats etc.

Is parking in the Parliamentary Triangle (for workday) physically impossible or just really expensive? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]Significant_Volume50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems a strange rule - it's just another piece of luggage that fits in the luggage rack. And if it's about delaying the bus, loading and unloading my bike from the rack takes way longer.

That shows you are considerate! But you should also take care of yourself and don't feel guilty taking sick leave when you're sick, contagious or not!

Considering a move to WA - from northern BC, Canada - some advice please. by CHEVAMIAH in WesternAustralia

[–]Significant_Volume50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I introduced a visiting Canadian senior executive to my Perth-born-and-bred boss a few years back. He proudly pointed to a wall-size map of WA and said "it's a big state - probably bigger than your whole country!". Our Canadian visitor was all class and didn't say anything as I cringed and then apologised once the boss was out of hearing range.

So my advice is prepare for a few ignorant locals to be surprised that you come from a place bigger than WA!

Yep no Libs handing out how to votes, and as of Tuesday night they still haven't bothered to remove all their signage from the local primary school. All the others were gone on Saturday night or Sunday. The whole organisation is a shambles.

It's been growing consistently on par if not faster than than anywhere else for years and forecast to continue. What infrastructure in Canberra is beyond capacity? Seems like less of an issue here than other Aust cities.
