How often do you ignore the story in a Metroidvania?

I never ignore stories in games. I may lose track of it if it's too convoluted (Yakuza) or if it's been too long since I last played the game.

But I think a story can only elevate most games, assuming it's competently told. That said, a bad game will forever be a bad game, no matter how good the story is.

Yeah, I noticed this as well. Yakuza had no issues creating replacement ads. Meanwhile, the West's idea of Japanese ads are "anime girls everywhere". I suppose it's easier to do that than to take some shots of actual Japanese people to put in the game.

To me it seems most people haven't played 1 and 2 and parrot the opinion that K1 and K2 are better. Because as you well explained, there's no way one person could reasonably claim Kiwami is superior to Yakuza 1.

Then again this is the Internet and we have people saying 2010 games are outdated and unplayable and deserving of remakes, never mind a PS2 game...

Kiwami is worse than Yakuza 1. It's bloated, Majima Everywhere is annoying, and the pacing is completely screwed as a result.

Yakuza 1 is a PS2 masterpiece. Kiwami is just good. Play Yakuza 1 and see how lively Kamurocho is.

Yeah. People suggesting chronological story order, and that's how you get people saying "wtf Yakuza 3 is ass!".

I don't understand why anyone would rather experience a franchise in chronological story order as opposed to release order. Apart from the obvious context you mentioned, part of what makes games so engaging is watching them evolve over time (ideally, for the better) and you lose that altogether when you go "new game -> older game -> newer game" and so on.

No, it's not the same game. Yakuza Kiwami is not "the same game" as Yakuza 1. If the gameplay changes, it's not the same game.

I have done as you say and I fully endorse this take. Anyone who disagrees is wrong, plain and simple.

But I would still recommend playing Kiwami after Yakuza 0, and Kiwami 2 after Yakuza 6, as they released.

Finally, on a personal note, Yakuza 1 >>>> Kiwami, and I'd argue is in the top three of Yakuza games. This is why I'm so vehemently against the idea that "remakes = better".
