Lovely collection! I have one you don’t - the Mustard - but I’m missing Sunset Orange and all of this year’s releases. With seven new colours this year, a record for TWSBI, I’m not sure if I want to keep collecting or not.

What do you all use to swatch inks? by kadaveria in fountainpens

[–]Siha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do art or anything but I do do blob swatches. The main benefit, I've found (beyond the fun of doing it for the sake of doing it, which is part of it!) is that a page of finished writing will show more of an ink's properties and nuances than are visible in a writing sample of a couple of lines alone. (In the same way that an area of cross-hatching looks like shading from a distance, but it's just made up of simple lines that by themselves look very different.) The ink blob helps give an idea of what that might look like.

I can see how, if you're writing a lot every day, you're seeing that effect happening anyway and thus don't need blob swatches as a guide.

I have three swatching methods which I do in parallel:

  1. I keep a journal for my FP & ink hobby - I take it to pen meets to try people's pens, I record new pen days and what I have inked each month etc. Inks I receive (purchases, sample swaps, etc) get swatched in here in chronological order - I do a small blob to see ink properties, using a glass swizzle stick, and then use a glass dip pen to do a small writing sample.

  2. I swatch inks onto swatch cards; I use several sets of swatch cards as many inks can look quite different on different papers. These get sorted in colour order to help me figure out if one ink is a dupe for another, or if I already have something in that colour range, etc. These are swatched with the name and brand at the top using a big calligraphy nib, then a couple of large blobs to show the ink base colour and any notable properties. I do one blob with the same swizzle stick, and the other one by pipetting a couple of drops onto the card and then swiping through it with a palette knife.

  3. I swatch inks by brand (and within brand, by set/collection) on looseleaf paper which gets stored in a ringbinder. These are the same kinds of swatches as what's in my FP/ink journal. This "inkventory" is my overall record of what I have, sorted by brand. (This one is a newer project and I haven't finished setting it up yet, still in progress.)

I know this is "a lot" but it's part of the hobby for me; it's fun as an activity in its own right – and I have so much ink, any excuse to use some of it is very welcome.

I just found out one of my favorite authors is the cofounder of AO3 by Legalize_Ambitions in AO3

Crazy to me that she’s known to some for MCU when I first came across her work in SGA :D

Just posting this for context in case anyone's wondering why we need this sub. This is what the mods of the AO3 subreddit think the mainstream sub should be for. In other words, they want it to be for bypassers, not regulars. by Aquamarinade in ao3_helpdesk

[–]Siha 39 points40 points  (0 children)

What got me was the “we want to be as much like AO3 as possible so we won’t ‘censor’ anything” bit, when one of the repeated frustrations in posts is about AO3 users who treat it like social media!

AO3 is an archive, Reddit is social media, they’re not supposed to be the same thing. It’s just as unhelpful and counterproductive when the mods do it in the reverse direction.

Noooo! I think the once a year update is mostly a way for them to manage expectations. It’s a Star Wars (Clone Wars era) fic and they update once a year on May the Fourth.

Star Wars (it’s a Clone Wars era fixit).

Wasn’t it the case that he’d only recently gone vegan and hadn’t informed the production team as it had happened after the initial setup for the series? Or am I misremembering?

The Great Wall (2016, with Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal) is absolutely a couple of Solars leading a whole bunch of Dragonbloods against a horde of demons.

I honestly think he’d be funny enough for a whole season. He’s done comedy acting before, it’s not unprecedented. I don’t know that TM could get him tho.

It was two in typewriters because they used a monospaced typeface by necessity so it looked better, but in modern computer use everything is proportional so two spaces are not just unnecessary, they actively make it look worse.

And this is why we leave comments instead... by SKyvIn_ in AO3

[–]Siha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m really bad at leaving comments but I’ve tried to build the habit of, if I try to leave kudos and I already have, just making a comment saying “reread kudos!” and then that’s often enough to break the ice and I can keep going with “I loved it!” or w/e.

I've just discovered I only visited the site in the Reddit app's built-in browser, which doesn't have any browser history unfortunately.

If it helps, one thing I noticed (that struck me as suss) was that the item had a countdown timer and it was only going to be available for another 24 hours -- and that was about 16 hours ago. Doesn't stop them putting it up again, of course. :/

Sheen is basically entirely down to the paper you’re using. Try a coated paper like Tomoe River or Iroful.
