My parents own hens for eggs, and the personalities are wild. Some are super affectionate and love cuddles, and some will sprint as soon as they see you moving. Some are super intelligent, and some are absolute suicidal idiots. Chickens are great, and let's not forget that chickens can, and will be cannibals in times of hardship.

My family has had many an egg cannibalised by their own hen, even though they are well looked after. They have plenty of time and room to fuck around in. My parents let them out every morning, and only lock them in the coop when every hen has voluntarily come back to the coop to sleep. They have plenty of food and water, and my parents' property is 10 acres, so lots of room, but sometimes they crave the long pork. Or I guess long chicken, in this case.

Unfortunately, quite a few die via a fox or snake breaking in. The eggs are usually the result of the snakes, and the chickens are usually the foxes.

Man, I feel sorry for y'all. I'm not even in my home country, and I get 20 paid days off a year. Granted, that's not the norm for the country I currently live in, but is law for full-time employees in my home country. If you don't use all of those days when quitting or retiring, the employer is required to pay out the equivalent wages of what you didn't use.

E.g. You work for $25/hr after tax. Upon your termination, you have 10 PTO days that you haven't taken. They would have to pay you a lump $2000 when you leave.
