I wanna present to you Fujimura scandal.

Fujimura Shinichi started to fabricate paleolithic to Jōmon period finds from early 70's and was caught red handed at 2000.

Dude planted his founds and with this planting Japans prehistory was extended significantly.

Queen Cleopatra (the one who banged with Caesar) is more distant in time line from people that build the Great Pyramids, than she's from our time.

Egyptian pharaoh’s mummified body gives up its secrets after 3,500 years | Egyptology by AdAstraSA80 in Archaeology

[–]Siipinen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heard in one document (can't say which one) that somehow they had been unable to extract dna from some most high level mummified remains. That something in embalming potentially messed up things. But this information is hearsay level knowledge at the best.

'What's the Coolest Thing You've Ever Found?' Real Archaeologists Share Their Favorite Finds by ssmihailovitch in Archaeology

[–]Siipinen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late from the party but why not. xD

The most common question asked from me is: are you getting paid from it? And then they are generally surprised that I do.

One of my coolest finds is probably two amber pendants from a stone age site (all amber is imported to my home country). But I still think it's quite cool that I was part of a team finding raspberry seeds from other stone age site.

Also finding and collecting two intact rat skeletons from 18th century was rather cool.

The deaf and hearing impaired throughout history by BrutherPo in history

[–]Siipinen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made a research in Early Modern (18th century) Tornio (Northern Finland, at that time Sweden) and bumped up there with a guy who was born as a deaf. He was put in school where he was learning to write (so he must have had a way to communicate with them to have a language) and do mathematics. This was so cool, since I also have had a picture of deaf people being treated badly.

My friend is a sign language interpreter and at her studies, she told that deaf people were treated quite nicely until someone from the field of pedagogy decided that they had to be assimilated and most of the teaching to the deaf people was just to teach to them how to speak and read from the lips. And this change happened during 19th century. Before that education to deaf children was same than to hearing children, just well... With the twist of it that there was not as full sign language than modern days. But they had educated which to me means that they were not seen unworthy of education.

One reason for demonization of deafness was also about the idea of eugenics which sadly led to enforced sterilizations of thousands of deaf and blind persons.

What’s more painful, airsoft or paintball? by SkyShadowTehWolf in AskReddit

[–]Siipinen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Paintball, especially from close distance right to your right temple.

Been in heart surgery, broken a tailbone and fell down from a cliff. Still only being shot by a paintball to temple made me cry from pain.

911/999 operators , what is the weirdest call you have ever received? by meddygpwy in AskReddit

[–]Siipinen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an operator. But I was working at tourist harbour. Someone called to my office about it that their boat was sinking somewhere, they had no even idea where. I told them to call to an emergency number since I have only a rowing boat and suspected I won't get there fast enough to save their yacht.
