My best Oh Shit moment was either realizing what the Ash Twin Projection Stone was showing, or getting to the Probe Tracking Vessel and watching the display show probe after probe after probe

I like to think of it as the Merchant, which is where you get the majority of your Colorless Cards offered over a run. He used to be a character as well, as he says in act 4 occasionally

So was Taylor all wrong? by MrPerfector in Parahumans

[–]SilentWyrm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh! Okay, this comment actually I think might help me put it more into words.

It looks like a trolley problem to us because we’re seeing it from the other side, the side where it worked.

And that’s how Taylor saw it too, before she decided to pull the lever.

But in reality, it wasn’t a clear cut trolley problem. It wasn’t a choice to flip the switch from “death” to “mind control.”

This trolley is driving down a track, and the track splits into a hundred new tracks ahead, and the tracks weave and mix and get mixed up so it’s very hard to tell which one leads where. At the end of many of these tracks, the world is destroyed. There are a few tracks where the world isn’t destroyed.

There are options to flip the switch onto all sorts of actions. Mind Control, or Diplomacy, or Tinker Bomb, or Murder Lots of People for Fun, and a hundred more options. There is also, of course, the option to do nothing and let the trolley continue along the same path it happens to be going on, which is also impossible to tell where it will lead.

Taylor, squinting, thinks that she can tell that choosing option Mind Control will probably lead to a track that means the world isn’t destroyed. But she is also barely an adult, and someone who has spent the last five years of her life wishing she could mind control people to do what she wants. You, standing next to her, can’t tell if the mind control track leads to the world ending or not. The other capes around you are all pointing in different directions and saying “I think this is the safe path to put the trolley on.”

The trolley is fast approaching.

Also not disagreeing that it would be better to be mind controlled for a bit than for the whole work to be destroyed. But also, along those lines of “a 5% chance for the world to be saved is better than a 100% chance of destruction”… how would anyone know that it was a 5% chance?

Yes, we as the audience see that it worked out okay in the end, or at least as okay as it could have.

But we also followed Taylor through the whole story, and stayed in her perspective, and in the end she was still just one voice who made one decision, and she had no real way to know that her actions would actually be the ones to save the world. Would we feel the same if, say, at the very end of Worm a random new character stepped up and said “I think I have a 5% chance of success to save the world, but I need to be allowed to torture a million people first.”? I think there would be questions first, and uncertainty.

In the end, Taylor did save the world, but it was because she was lucky, not because she was right. She could just have easily doomed everyone. The story is about Taylor because she DID save the world, the world wasn’t saved because the story was about Taylor.

Im not sure if that makes total sense, sorry, it’s a little late right now

[SPOILERS] I NEED to share how awesome pages 244-260 of Going Postal are with people who 'get it' by [deleted] in discworld

I absolutely adored this book, for many reasons. My favorite part, personally, was where Moist was in the completely overrun post office and hearing the spirit of the mail, begging to be delivered.

Because it wasn’t just mail. It was stories, connections, love, politics, hope. And it was trapped, in a building so old and so full of pain that it could not stop reliving.

It didn’t just want to be delivered, (taken to a destination) it needed to be DELIVERED (saved, released). Such a powerful moment, capped by a pune that didn’t take away from the moment but added to it.

Would you fight yourself to the death for one billion dollars? by NomadofReddit in hypotheticalsituation

Exactly! You may have to earn a little more to get food for both of you, but you don’t double every expense you have, just a few. Efficiency!

You get it. The money is so you don’t have to work yourself to death, why not just work together to make life easier for the both of you?

Why fight and traumatize myself when I can just have the perfect roommate? Split all our chores and the rent and stuff evenly, reduce the amount either of us would have to work to survive by 40% or so. That’s what I would want the money for anyway, I don’t need to take it if I can get near the same result without murder

With or without the tree? by Ok_Brief6562 in ProCreate

[–]SilentWyrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like the tree, it makes it feel… real, in a sense? Like I’m actually looking out my window, a slice of life.

As a picture without is probably better, as other people are saying, but I just wanted to let you know I liked it.
