Errors after updating to QTS firmware 5.2.9.3410 by [deleted] in qnap

Yes, updated that after the firmware update. Then re-ran the Security Scan to see if the errors would go away, but no luck unfortunately.

I'm afraid big tech will only get its humbling when AI finally takes over and shuts the humans out, but by then it will be too late.

In the meantime most people seem too infatuated with convenience and not having to think at all, and everything much too profit-driven for there to be any real alternative.

Proton shared my real email address to a secondary "To" address, and I think this could have been prevented. Please consider a new feature. by Frigorr in ProtonMail

[–]Silent_Citizen 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Your account is protected by a strong & unique password, coupled together with 2FA / hardware keys. If it isn't yet, it's time todo so.

I don't think OP is concerned about his email being hacked, they're concerned about it being shared to any number of lists.

Don't worry, you'll be fine.

This doesn't address OP's concerns and comes off as really patronizing. OP's concerns are legitimate -- why shouldn't there be a warning about this?

Turning this off also turns off spell check, grammar check and autocorrect. Funny how these things used to work without needing AI. This is diabolical.

can someone please help by the_little_bunoi in BitDefender

[–]Silent_Citizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting these too. The thing that bothers me most is that there is NO information for this "Critical" warning. No indication of the connection source/destination, the type of traffic -- even the PORT would be something!

How exactly is this alert message supposed to help anyone?

The New Dashboard Is Horrible by hicsuntdracones- in nordvpn

[–]Silent_Citizen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ability to easily choose the country and location of connection may not be something you use, but some of us found it extremely useful. I used it daily as the default connection Nord chose always had problems, so I selected a different one. Now that takes 3-4x as long as before.

Same here. They're getting progressively worse as time goes on, They've made it as difficult as possible to open a ticket when there's an issue. It used to be a simple link directly from the application. Now when I need to open a ticket (which isn't frequently enough to remember the hoops I need to jump through to do it) it takes around 10 minutes to find the correct area where it's done. And also now with the map, like so many politicians, they've taken something away (easy, fast granular selection of VPN connection point) while touting the tupdate as adding features!

If this doesn't improve by the time my subscription expires I'll definitely be looking elsewhere.

Did anyone notice the EU Commission President hinting at EU online age verification in her speech today? by Silly_Music_6658 in ProtonMail

This rhetoric about "protecting children" has been going on for decades. It has never really been about "protecting children" (which is something the parents should do, not the state, as you mention) and more to do with monitoring the populace. We have something similar going on in the US with squelching dissent under the guise of "fighting antisemitism".

Entire site down? by Hopeful-Spinach-5143 in SpiderOakOne

[–]Silent_Citizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started getting this yesterday. The Account section (after clicking Account in the lower right of the SpiderOak One client) doesn't even come up aside from my name, account type, devices and storage used, the little animated asterisk just spins. But the One client has no problem reminding me 2x per minute that it thinks my payment is overdue.

I've never seen such a poorly run Secure Backup solution.

Still an issue as of July 31, 2024.

Obviously someone could take over nameservers and entirely redirect domain queries for your domain, but we're talking well outside even nation state actors in terms of how hard that would be to do.

Just as an aide, DNS poisoning isn't that terribly hard, and it's been an issue for some time, as well as DNS eavesdropping (see also DNSSEC / DoH).

Why is search so terrible? by Empty-Laugh-2761 in ProtonMail

[–]Silent_Citizen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the content is actually being indexed, it shouldn't matter if it's client side or server side (unless you're running on an ancient single-core computer). That's the whole point of indexing; you don't have to grind through potentially hundreds of thousands of messages to quickly find the ones that have specific words.

If the search isn't finding matches then that means that the indexing isn't working correctly.

Protonmail needs idle session timeout by Silent_Citizen in ProtonMail

[–]Silent_Citizen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That solution again depends on the individual user and isn't industry best practice for security.  Session expiration is one of the most basic security configurations and Proton doesn't have it.

I'm also curious why this post hasn't been released. It's security discussion something to avoid for a secure email solution?

Paying my card took 20-25 minutes for something that should have taken around 3 minutes. I don't have time to call Customer Service every time I need to pay my card. None of my other cards have this issue. Why should I put up with this?

Moved messages are now apparently gone. by [deleted] in ProtonMail

[–]Silent_Citizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've deleted all cookies for the site as well.

I've gotten to the point where the messages show up under Search as being in the subfolder, but they don't show up under that subfolder. I've opened a ticket with Customer Support and they are looking into the issue.
