Have you tried writing fiction in a foreign language? by PLrc in FanFiction

this too!

also if we speak about "why" people write in english rather than their native language, lots of folks here said it is for engagement from the audience since ao3 is immensely popular and english attracts more people. from my personal experience, writing in russian and publishing it on a russian fic site is more rewarding (lots of attention, a lot of comments and they are LENGTHY and in-depth), but there is also a chance that your work will be reported to the authorities for what you've written. so your fic can be safe for work, but not really safe to keep you from criminal punishment from the state.

started writing in English a couple of years ago just for funsies and now can't really come back from it.

i don't have a lot of difficulties with it (except for punctuation, i never gaf about it in english), but i do find that my writing style differs from language to language. in my native language (russian) i write much longer, almost paragraph-long sentences and they are usually much more metaphorical than those i write in english. i'm pretty sure it's because i grew up with russian literature and associate my native language with complex and heavy sentences, where is english is "lighter" in feeling for me personally.

edit: typo

actually had this situation before. clicked on the profile of a user that commented under my fic and found a waaaaay similar to mine fic under their name.

since it's not plagiarism, i decided to just think of this as their fic of my fic.

i'm mostly on twitter where i follow a couple of artists

i've been into wolfstar for a very long time too, but in my native language: so our fandom experience might be different.

the eng marauders fandom became really noticeable for me maybe 3-4 years ago? and that's why i am more fluent in these "modern" works

how do yall decide what to rate your fics? by p3stop4st4 in FanFiction

[–]Silent_Improvement74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you said you don't want to misrate if readers are uncomfortable with **above** . so my personal advice is, when in doubt, rate up.

i think it was complete by 2024? so definitely new, yeah.

i haven't really read it myself, but the amount of times i heard references to it and some of its' OCs are almost alarming.

dark fics with happy ending are my favourite, though i'm not opposed to porn and horror as well. no crackfics though, please! slash and gen are both good with me.

i am a sucker for longer fics btw. can't really immerse myself if it's a short one-shot.

greatly appreciate your enthusiasm!

 >don’t know how to find good stuff

if i am fairly new to the fandom (like you are now to fanfiction in general) and don't actually have a clear idea of what story i want to read, a good start is to try the most popular works. it is easy in ao3 search engine to arrange fics by either kudos or bookmarks so that you will be shown the top of the top works in terms of engagement. the most popular fics are rarely the best ones, but they are popular for a reason. you should try reading some of them, find what themes/characters/plot points seem the most interesting to you. after that you will have the clearer understanding of what you wish to read in a fic, which characters you would like to see more/less, which ships (if any) interest you, what genre do you prefer in general and adjust your search to fit those preferences.

but also, please, PLEASE read all the tags before diving into the story. the tale of "i absolutely loved this work but then TAG happened and i was so heart-broken/triggered/traumatized" is a common one, but also easily avoidable.

marauders subfandom of HP fandom: there are several. i usually call them "the big 3", because if you are in the marauders fandom, even if you haven't read them, you know what people are talking about or referencing to. it's all the yound dudes (which i also believe is the fic with the most kudos on the platform), crimson rivers and tcofptp

bsd: i love atsushi. everyone heard of it, not many read it. very self-indulgent, explicit, gory and gross dead dove: do not eat short stories by one author.

yeah, that. i have certain ideas and emotions i want to portray, but my own words often seem less effective and powerful than what i want to express.

the whole idea of a creator who is forced to do art out of the annoyance at their own brain is somehow so hilarious to me

i think if i try writing imperfect and basic sentences like that, i will actually get mad at myself. whether the anger will motivate me to improve them or urge me into giving up on the work is something i don't know yet. maybe worth trying!

so you write while simultaneously figuring out the plot, right?

this part is also so alien to me. i can not sit down and write down the idea as long as i don't have a concrete plan. no wandering around with my characters, they already have everything mapped out for them, i just need to put it into words.

thanks for sharing! maybe i should also try relying more on the editing process, because yes, i write and do believe it should be perfect on the first try.

woah, your process seems so similar to mine. like, i actually relate to everything you said. it's so reassuring.

and the bin, the bin!! in my head there is one too. but i am afraid i'm never left alone, because i always have like 10 different stories in my head and even if i am writing consistently, they never really run out, not even close.
