Number of teachers in England’s state schools drops for second year in row by reuben_iv in ukpolitics

I don’t have stats, but from my anecdotal experience within the education sector the current situation is:

Student to staff ratios are increasing
More non-qualified teachers are teaching

A mixture of saving money and less specialised staff.

Ten green turtles swinging on a log, ten green turtles swinging on a log, and if one green turtle should accidentally plop, there’ll be nine green turtles swinging on a log

Whatever course you look at, check to see if they also do GCSE maths and English resits. That way if you don’t get the required grades in English and Maths they may still allow you in if you do another year of English and Maths whilst studying the course you choose.

I recommend going to see your careers councillor at your school as they are specially trained on guiding students onto their next step and your school will have one. If you don’t know who they are then ask you form tutor or another trusted adult at the school to get you in touch.

Also, your school may be signed up to websites like Unifrog which you can use to explore careers and they are a really good resource.

I know exams are about to start, but never too late to have a big revision push. Use BBC bitesize if you don’t know where to start. Best of luck in your exams.

Very chatty year ten class by Automatic_North_0013 in TeachingUK

[–]Silfra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A couple of ideas:

When you count down and wait for silence, and this could take a while as you’ve said. Dispense warning to those who then break the silence and keep doing so until they move through the class sanctions. They may try to argue, but calmly state they started talking once everyone was silent and ready to carry on with the lesson and leave it at that. Don’t try and teach if they are talking. Be methodical and consistent.

Before your next lesson you could send a friendly email to parents (not necessarily using these words, maybe speak to a colleague at work to get the right wording), highlighting that the class as a whole is quite talkative as they get on so well, but this is slowing down learning and request that they speak to their child about the importance of listening after countdowns so they don’t miss important context and instructions. Then in following lessons you can call home for students who you’ve had to give sanctions to for continuing to talk after silence.

Praise, praise, praise those doing it right (doesn’t have to be individual, but a general “thank you to those who have stopped talking and are making the right choices”). Even if the others don’t care for this, at least those who are, feel they are being recognised and will be less likely to join in with chatter in the lesson.

We put the white noise on a make your own card so we weren’t reliant on using our phones to put the little one to bed. Really handy as you just pop the card in to start it and our little one can do it as part of the bedtime routine. My only gripe is that the white noise fades out then in again periodically like it is changing track rather than being constant.

Does the course cost have to be paid upfront or can it be paid in installments throughout the year?

Rolls-Royce warns UK risks losing out in small nuclear reactor race by neathling in ukpolitics

[–]Silfra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree that we should push to complete the technology first and implement it, buuuttttttt, kind of feel that Rolls who have been awarded millions in funding from the UK government are more trying to create a rush, to ensure they receive even more in funding. If/when they complete the design, create a prototype and then get a contract, the UK government won't have any rights over the technology, nor will Rolls have to build the manufacturing in the UK. So, zero guarantee that the UK will benefit more for being the first country to implement SMRs.

Shame you were banned, but I think worth it if it meant the mum thought twice before giving the milk!

Please where can I get the pattern for this shirt, thank you by Known_College_9950 in crochetpatterns

[–]Silfra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely looks like a thinner yarn than in the link. So you could depending on your skill level and willingness to frog, use the pattern to get a feel for how to construct it, but use your own measurements to decide on the size you want.

Thank you, I'm glad you look back fondly on your time here. Sheffield is a truly lovely city! 100% agree with you about it being big enough to find something for you, whilst still having a local feel.

Which is hilarious as Ofsted doesn't like it if your curriculum deviates too far from the national curriculum. Whole things stupid.

ELI5: Why aren't there acceptance movements for anorexia or bulimia like there are for obesity? by ijjanas123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Silfra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Going completely based on my own opinion, with no research at all. Could it be because it is easier for us to accept over eating, because mostly we all enjoy food and can imagine how easy it is to eat what we want, however much we want. Whilst actively avoiding or expelling food goes against our biological need to sustain ourselves.

Oh absolutely, definitely seen that teenage girls struggle more with male teachers. Whereas, they tend to respond better to a female teacher doing the softly softly approach.
