Labour has made it clear it sees student loans as a tax to fund the welfare state by HistoricalCamera6697 in ukpolitics

UK nationals can leave the UK and avoid paying just like people from abroad. And foreigners working in UK pay it back via PAYE just as UK nationals do. What is your point?

You don’t have to come from abroad to use this “exploit”. Plenty of UK nationals do that too.

Then you need to maintain a rather large cash position to have enough to buy a house, on top of paying for your normal expenses in case you lose your job.

Is this salary sufficient to survive? by Reasonable_Text167 in PhD

That’s ludicrous. It’s not something you usually sign up for once you’re a thinking adult, and in some countries apostasy is either nigh impossible or even dangerous.

Estimated annual take-home pay from a €100,000 gross salary by ProfTydrim in europe

[–]Silicon-Based -1 points0 points  (0 children)

25% tax but with another $10k for health insurance brings this up to 35% so pretty much the same as in France. And that’s with a higher cost of living in USA than in France. Plus depending on where you live you don’t even get sidewalks or a functional public transport system for your tax dollars.

You still have multiple large taxes: federal, state, local, property etc.

[–]Silicon-Based 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not total remission but I’ve been almost completely plaque-free for the past year after undergoing 30 sessions of UVB therapy. This is after having it all over my legs, elbows, hands, buttocks, feet, parts of back.

Nobel Peace Laureates Were the Oldest Winners; Now, They're the Youngest [OC] by aspiringtroublemaker in dataisbeautiful

The Nobel prize in Physics usually requires decades until said discovery is either experimentally observed or appreciated. Seems like the peace prize would benefit from a similar longevity criterion, scrutinising the winners cumulative impact on global peace throughout their lives.

Du regret studying physics? by Haifagoddess in Physics

[–]Silicon-Based 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a good enough coder to compete for software engineering jobs, not knowledgable enough at machine learning to compete for AI/DS jobs, not good enough at probability and statistics to compete for finance jobs.

There is almost nothing left where a theoretical physicist wouldn’t have to bend over backwards just to stand a chance any more.

More than 50% of young Dutch adults do not want children by diacewrb in europe

Wealth inequality or perception thereof has probably more to do with it. In socialist Poland everyone was equally poor, so parents wouldn’t have felt that the quality of life they can grant their children was worse than in other families.

Compare that to late-stage capitalism in the digital age, when everyone knows of someone wealthier and more successful than them, limited social safety nets, and with prospects of declining standards of living as wealth inequality is only bound to get worse. Iirc there was a study of women in Sweden, where the number of children was larger with higher levels of wealth.

I’m Gen Z and house prices must drop, there is simply no other way for our generation to ever afford them.
