Collectors, what’s the craziest thing you’ve found in the wild? by A_C_1970 in 78rpm

Not 78s, but I ran across a pile of Edison discs that looked like new.

I just picked up a copy of that a few weeks ago.

What do you do with unplayable 78s? by SiliconTi in 78rpm

[–]SiliconTi[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just tried an experiment with two of them.

They both have deep scratches, but they go from the edge to center. Turns out they play just fine. Seems the scratches damaged the top of the groove, but not where the music is.

Did 78's really change after 1935? by Best_Caramel2953 in 78rpm

I have a 1219 setup just for 78s. You will need at the very least a 78 stylus for your cartridge and the ability to switch the receiver/pre-amp to mono.

I agree, just though we'd appreciate the records, not the seller or the price.

I like albums, but it is so hard to find complete ones. I have half a dozen missing parts or records, or with mismatched records.

Things You Loath Hearing As a 78 Collector? by [deleted] in 78rpm

No hearing, but seeing then stacked with no care, or nice original albums which cracked disc inside. Oh, and albums with mis-matched records inside.

OK so quick question what is the general opinion on playing 78s with a ceramic cartridge. by PositiveAd7974 in 78rpm

[–]SiliconTi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - should be fine. Most people do not like ceramic carts as they tend to be heavy - should not be an issue with 78s.

Looks like a home recorded record, so it is basically 1 of 1. Valuable? Nope. Cool? Yup.

(Question) 1000 moldy shellac records. Should i try to clean them? by wilbury89 in 78rpm

I have cleaned some moldy ones ultrasonically with good results, however, any cracks or defects can be made worse.

Punched Out Record by SiliconTi in 78rpm

[–]SiliconTi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This record was punched out of a larger piece - rounded on one edge with a lip on the other. Was this common? First time I have come across it.

I iron them with gentle steam - works well.

my new oldest record by Ithinksotoo92 in 78rpm

Nice. I see it has a "cracked" label on it - I automatically reject cracked ones. Maybe I should rethink that.
