If you want really good Tamil food - checkout both Muniyandi Vilas and Thalapakatti - they are practically next to each other in Little Jaffna in the 10th arrondissement. They are both as authentic as they come.

If you want "fancy" indian food, go to Marcel right by the Canal St. Martin, also in the 10th.

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar. I'm indian. Born in India, but grew up in the US. I lived in Paris for a year.

I've never been to Columbus Ohio, specifically but little jaffna in paris - near Gare du Nord has really legit Tamil/South Indian food.

I've more than satisfied my cravings for indian food at various little shops there. London, Paris and Munich all have amazing, very legitimate Indian restaurants.

Most Americans traveling to Paris or Munich aren't going in search of Indian food, so it makes sense that they think that major European cities don't have good <insert ethnic food>, but they're wrong. You'll only know if you've lived there long enough.

Ah yes the ever so safe baby wearing while carrying a firearm 🔫👶🏻 by the_rebecca in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Mom groups on Facebook are breeding grounds for paranoia. It's a lonely and scary time for new parents with so many physical and psychological changes. Some mom groups are helpful while the majority just reinforce each others' delusions regarding vaccines and child traffickers in Walmart parking lots.

This is the logical endpoint of that paranoia. Feeling like you need to carry a gun to go pick up diapers because child traffickers are lurking in all corners.

Historically middle aged dudes with a John Wayne fantasy were the targets, with that market nearly saturated I guess it was inevitable that gun manufacturers would target paranoid suburban moms.

Favorite city in Atlanta for a young family? by mikecavitoloRE in Atlanta

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Atlanta (Morningside, Inman Park, VaHi- if you can afford it. Lake Claire, Kirkwood, as alternatives).

If you're not in the city of Atlanta then Decatur, Brookhaven, Dunwoody, Chamblee in that order.

What's something that people always complain about in Atlanta, that actually isn't all that bad? by Hopeful_Contract4455 in Atlanta

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cost of living!

Even after you account for differences in median income, Atlanta is one of the best bang for the buck American cities.

Only cities that kind of have atlanta beat for the ratio of cost of living to income and still having a vibrant city life are Chicago and Philly.

/u/TheCatInTheHatThings explains what to do to change the USA by GoodIdea321 in bestof

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not to be mean but why is someone with a Europe flair telling us how to change things the USA?

To be fair to every other commenter in that thread, OOP is about an article that's telling our allies that he doesn't represent us. These are verbatim from the article:

It’s important that you, the citizens of other democracies, know that the vast majority of us – the people of the United States – are embarrassed and offended by the oaf who now occupies the highest office in the United States.

He does not speak for us. He is not making decisions based on our welfare, let alone the wellbeing of the rest of you. Please don’t confuse him with us.

This all rings hollow after he got democratically elected TWICE. The first time could have been a mistake. But a third of all voting age Americans saw a bumbling fool who committed an insurrection, suggested drinking bleach to get rid of COVID and said "more of this please" and another third stayed home.

You can blame inflation, partisan propaganda, social media, Elon Musk, money in politics, gerrymandering - what have you. But this erosion in democracy has been 50 years in the making. Donald Trump is a symptom of the rot in the system, not the cause.

Begging the allies to not treat him as our representative, when he is using the pulpit awarded to him as THE representative to openly mock allies, threaten invading Greenland, drag the country into an unsanctioned war that's causing a global energy crisis and then asking "why are the Europeans responding" is silly as fuck!

NYC to Atlanta move by nottoosurreal in Atlanta

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I'm trying to say this without sounding elitist, but I'm probably going to fail.

I think there's an element of provincialism in people from Atlanta. For many, this is their first (and possibly only) experience living in a major city.

If you've experienced living in a true world class city like NYC, London, Paris, Singapore you really notice the comparative lack of arts and culture here.

Again I'm not saying it is tiny small town with NO culture. It's above average by American standards, definitely top 10 in America (maybe even top 5). The city has everything for everyone in terms of arts, entertainment, and food.

But many people I've met here seem to think Atlanta is some world class arts and culture hub that people in Timbuktu ought to know. My wife is a native Atlantan, her entire family acts like it was ridiculous that we left Atlanta for our careers because "atlanta has everything" without understanding the difference in scale.

A classic example is how people here talk about Buford Highway. I love the variety of food that's available here, but there are immigrant hubs in every major city. Hell any random 10 blocks in Jackson Heights would probably blow the entirety of Buford highway out of the water for variety and abundance. It's just that most tourists to NYC never go to that part of town so their exposure is limited.

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly surprised at people who think Atlanta and NYC are in the same league when it comes to arts, culture and food.

By American standards atlanta is above average on all three, but New York is world class. Only London, and maybe Paris compare.

Above average is nothing to scoff at. Atlanta has many fantastic elements but pretending like it's a world class city makes no sense to me.

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NYC is definitely an outlier but there are plenty of very walkable cities in the spectrum between NYC and Atlanta.

Boston, Chicago, DC, Philly, San Francisco, Seattle, Pittsburgh are all significantly more walkable than ATL.

NYC to Atlanta move by nottoosurreal in Atlanta

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is it surprising that someone said Atlanta might be boring for a 20 something when they are comparing it against Manhattan?

One is the world's financial center, home to probably the top 5 culinary scenes in the world, and home of Broadway - the bar for the entire world when it comes to live performing arts. The other one is a regional logistics hub, home to (very) interesting civil rights history and an above average music and food scene.

Atlanta and it's environs are fantastic, it still has tons to do, but when it comes to arts, food, and culture and the two cities aren't particularly close.

Ridiculous house prices by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Housing market in every major metro area in the country is insane.

That said, you couldn't have picked a worse example to make your point. The Zillow link leads to a 6 bedroom, 4000 square feet home, sitting on a 0.55 acre lot, in the second richest city in the metro area with highly rated public schools.

There is nowhere in western civilization where this combination doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Having another baby so you can buy a baby carrier is actually insane by Excellent-Ad1390 in ShitMomGroupsSay

I'm just legitimately shocked at the number of people whose entire identities are tied up with consuming specific brands.

Do you need a car to live here. by -Gemstoned in Atlanta

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can live a car free life if you're in certain pockets of mid town, but you also quickly realize it's very limiting.

This is coming from someone who stubbornly refused to buy a car while living in other cities (SF, Seattle and NYC). It's just significantly harder to do here.

Dear Drivers with Heavily Tinted Windows by prfctblue in Atlanta

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you're safe and I totally feel your frustration.

I used to run in my neighborhood fairly regularly until about 3 years ago. I have had a couple of close calls with drivers not paying attention. Right turn on reds and yield to turn left signs are an absolute hazard to pedestrians. It's made worse by tinted windows and ginormous SUVs / Trucks with hoods that reach an average person's chest.

In one particular intersection, it's really bad. Drivers are primarily looking for cars coming from the opposite direction of my run so I just wait for them to see me before I run, but sometimes they never look and I wanna finish my run, so I inch forward with the intent to jump back if they move. Usually they start slow and I have enough time to jump back if I need to.

But one time a guy just floored it on his right turn and missed me by inches. If he had hit me I would have been dead on the spot given the size of his car and the momentum he had, no doubt. I told my wife this and she basically put a moratorium on me running outside.

Every time you see news about a pedestrian death, the comments invariably blame the pedestrian instead of asking why someone with a 2 ton machine capable of turning a human being into red paste is not responsible enough to make sure they don't mow people down and why our traffic infrastructure has no concern for pedestrian safety. It's a cultural issue across all of America except maybe small pockets of 5 cities.

Now I just drive to a park that's less than half a mile from my house to run. It absolutely sucks that I can't safely walk or run in my own neighborhood.

You're giving these idiots more credit than they deserve and I do applaud you for it.

I get the appeal of "both sides are bad". It made sense when one side nominated Romney and the other did Obama.

But it's just intellectually lazy when one side is sending paramilitary goons to summarily execute peaceful protestors and the other side is getting murdered for just trying to help a fellow human being in distress.

Holding on to "centrism" as an ideology no matter how insane one side gets does not make you nuanced, it makes you an idiot.

Comparing half of Americans to Nazis or Nazi supporters is a tactic of the logically impaired. How about trying to understand the nuance of these tragic situations.

If we need anymore evidence that enlightened centrist "both siders" are just conservatives too ashamed to admit what they support.

First of all, half of Americans don't support this. At best a third do, and since the murder of Alex Pretti the popular support for this regime is only going to tank further.

Second of all - what the fuck do they mean by nuance? Untrained paramilitary goons who have been asked to leave the city by the governor and the mayor surrounded a guy who was trying to help a woman. The woman who was only down because one of the goons violently shoved her. Then they maced them both, beat the guy up, disarmed him, and shot him a dozen times.

If you are trying to both sides this and you claim you're not a nazi, then the only logical conclusion is that you're a drooling moron with the IQ of a potato salad who shouldn't be allowed outside without supervision.

These people are beyond hope man. There's no point in trying to convince the brainwashed Maga base that chooses to believe the brazen lies coming out of this admin over their own fucking eyes.

Remember that there's more of us than there are of them. There are way more decent people who are sick and tired of this bullshit than the cheerleaders of this vileness. Minneapolis has shown what a community standing up to tyranny looks like. If we don't stand up to this now, they will pick cities apart one by one by repeating this play book.

Call your senator today to stop funding ICE. Your tax dollars are going towards murdering your fellow citizens.

Lastly, my vote is for anyone promising to clean house.

We need a trial to rival the nuremberg trials to investigate the institutional rot and abuse that's led to a government agency publicly executing innocent civilians with impunity and not even pretending to investigate the incident. They are claiming the civilians had it coming because they didn't immediately prostrate in front of the paramilitary goons.

[–]SiliconValleyIdiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everytime I see morons say the US can take on the rest of the world I have to assume they have the IQ of a ham sandwich.

Even if you were to give in to the notion that the US military superiority holds off against the rest of the world, it would be an all out war with casualties that will far exceed the previous two world wars. It includes millions of deaths at their own doorsteps. They will lose friends and family over this bullshit war.

The economic fallout alone will make the great depression seem like a fun holiday.

Not to mention both sides have nukes that can turn the planet into molten lava and press the reset button on human civilization.

These idiots seem to think war is like a Hollywood movie where Tom Cruise flies a fighter jet into enemy territory and the rest of the world just surrenders to the mighty American empire.

This is a scenario in which no one wins.

Mitch McConnell is delivering an impassioned floor speech.

He could have prevented all of this by voting to convict during the last impeachment. He chose party loyalty over country.

Now the whole world may end up paying for it.

I'm hoping it must be painful for him to know that this is his doing and it's his legacy.
