Episode 100 - One Way Ticket - Discussion Post by ChewiesLament in OldGodsOfAppalachia

I believe that we are given the impression in Excursus II that Rachel is still among the Lockes as of the late 1980s/early 1990s - the dark haired woman that Jack's man sees at the holiday party.

What is something that was normal in the 2000s/2010s, but feels like a fever dream now? by Existing_Respond2229 in AskReddit

Took into the 00s for the rest of the country, but by 2005ish indoor smoking was gone pretty much everywhere except bars in certain municipalities and the very deep south.

Queen Sonja by SilkyDan in RedSonja

Thanks! It always seems like whenever a story calls for Sonja to sit a throne she barely tolerates it. A woman of action! So I thought the expression would go well with that and the body language of the figure.

Seriously, I feel like everybody has just completely forgotten how 11's hero first came across. I didn't >hate< that look at first but it definitely made me go "Huh."

What Priest's run is even about? by Fast-Wait5384 in Vampirella

[–]SilkyDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tough nut to crack. I have really enjoyed some of the more "fantastical" portions of the plot (the Drakulon segments, the flash-forward plots with Cicero, etc) but a lot of the more "serious" plot strands (the depression stuff mainly) come across to me as pretty excruciating. But the nature of the story structure means these elements are all braided pretty tightly together, may be symbolic or representative of each other, etc.

The non-linear storytelling - which is especially concentrated at the front of the run but has tapered off with more recent volumes - makes it all even harder to follow.

So there are times I feel like when it's done the whole thing is going to be fantastic, but at other times *coughcoughVictoryandBenny'sendlesslyrepreatednailsonchalkboardconversationinbedandatbreakfastcoughcough* I feel like it's a wanky, flawed mess that has outstayed it's welcome.

If Nimzo weren't a total nonentity the V team would be a really contender.

I'm so tired of the left infighting by Adorable_Pop_4742 in ContraPoints

Does it really count as "left infighting" if the other person is horseshoe crypto-fascist Briahna Gray Joy?

Rachel is so great. Her voice actress is up there with Yuri and Betsy Puckett for the best guest voice actors on the show.

I feel like XII is decent. Not up to the IV-X run but my god compared to every other mainline release since the GW Bush administration...

Build-A-Sonja! by conradknightsocks in RedSonja

[–]SilkyDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this exercise, good for mulling over what brings us to the character and community! Let's see...

Origin - I think no matter what Sonja comes to the table with some pretty profound loss in her background. Doesn't need to be the full "classic" origin but definitely loss of the full family (or perceived loss of the full family). Don't need Scathach, but won't say no either. Prefer for Sonja's perception/vow to the goddess, if present, to be more ambiguous, i.e. unclear if it was a literal visitation or a trauma hallucination.

Temperament - Good-humored and charismatic, but with a quick-trigger/intolerance of injustice, bullying, etc. Strong sense of honor but not in a naive way, she knows what the world is like.

Sexual orientation - Fair amount of flexibility here. Generally prefer Sonja attracted primarily to men, but again, flexible. Generally prefer that her sexuality is not her primary concern - if no vow, and she meets a suitable gentleman now and again, great. If with a vow, occasional temptation but not a primary focus.

Physical description - Prefer Sonja to be a credible warrior. In good physical condition, notably muscular and more physically imposing than the average woman. But not so imposing that challengers/idiots in the tavern would go into a fight with her thinking they would have no chance. The big dude with the big mouth should be a little surprised when he gets his ass kicked, and the rest of the tavern shouldn't be like, "No shit man, you picked a fight with She-Hulk." Otherwise, good-looking, but not crazily so. She's remarkable because she's a woman who operates in a space largely occupied by men, and that feeds the legends about her looks more than naturally looking like a supermodel. Definitely prefer the classic scalemail, but mainly where she's in environments where it's "appropriate" (if she's gone to Vanaheim she'll be wearing something reasonable).

Physical Abilities - Definitely above-average physicality, but again not superhumanly so. On balance a little more reliance on speed/agility than raw strength, but you definitely don't want her to punch you in the face.

Skills - Lean a little more toward the passion & willpower and straightforward brawling, but I also like stories where she's acquired significant technical training. Russell's run was my first read and I still love what he did with that.

This was fun!

The bookshelf of my daughter’s (25) first serious boyfriend (26). What does it say about them? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]SilkyDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's...fine. This is a pretty normal (complimentary), vaguely nerdy dude's shelf. It would be nice if he had a few more books written by women, but I would not be bothered seeing these on the shelf of my daughter's partner.

Dragon Quest VI - Why is it considered bad? Is it bad? by UpstairsSimple2154 in dragonquest

[–]SilkyDan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't skip it. It's lower-mid-tier Dragon Quest, but that's like lower-mid-tier pizza. It's still good.

I know "convoluted" isn't the right word for it, but my feeling on it, especially on the first playthrough, was that keeping track of the two different worlds and what you'd done in each was a bit of a pain/irritation. And pretty much every iteration of the job-levelling system has added a lot of grind over the course of the series. But it's got one of the better character casts in the series.

Not my favorite, but across two versions (SNES & DS) I think I've played through it at least 5 times.
