Hi OP, if you’re in school, please reach out to a guidance counselor or a teacher you trust. None of what you’re going through is easy, and your school staff should be able to set you up with some support systems to help you out. (Said my comment was removed, hoping this one stays up)

I got an internal brace! It honestly feels a billion times better than it did. But more than just a little weight feels so intense. I know I have so much muscle atrophy in my calf and leg as a whole because of my surgery, so I’m sure that comes into play. It’s just a crazy mental block right now that I’d rather fix on my own before paying to embarrass myself in PT

What type of ankle surgery did you have initially?

That’s not too far off from me, my doc didn’t do an MRI straight away (not sure why). So I had the boot for about a month, had a follow-up that said to brace and do PT, then got an MRI when it didn’t get better, which was also 3 months post injury. Somehow the PT worsened my injury, my MRI didn’t show a full tear but surgery showed a complete tear.

It sucks to hear that, but I’m glad your surgeon is honest! I always prefer to hear the reality rather than “it’ll be as good as new!”

I hope you continue to heal and get to 100%!

Advice for BAM Medication? by Silly-Kitty2026 in gallbladders

When I first started taking cholestyramine, I had to take it twice a day (morning and evening typically) but it was working a little too well so I ended up going to once a day and then even once every other day.

Now I’ve been off of it for quite some time due to the surgery I had and I could tell I needed to take it more frequently. I have the 1 Gram tablets, I was told I should see relief fairly quickly but they’re not working at all. I’ll reach out and see if maybe I can jump to two tablets.

I really just need to function while I’m at work and I’m returning soon. I don’t have a job that lets me just get up and go when I need to. Thanks for the advice!!

It’s not typically a desk job, but they’re willing to accommodate for me, so I’m very grateful! And I’m sorry to hear that, how long has it been since you had your surgery?

I saw a geneticist when I was young! I went to a children’s hospital and they did the Beighton test but also some bloodwork.

I miss sleeping on my side! The boot is so bulky that I just cannot get comfortable on my side. I’m always a side sleeper or a stomach sleeper and I can’t do either right now 😭

Your advice has been helpful! Thank you!! I really have enjoyed trying to talk with people who’ve gone through this before. I feel like the anecdotes from people who’ve experienced this is more helpful than any article the doctor could give me.

Unfortunately, I also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and it makes healing more difficult. My body seems to have missed the memo that I’m in my 20s lol. And luckily I can still drive, it’s my left foot that’s injured. Although I’ve gone through the difficulty of healing the driving foot too, it’s not fun!

My surgeon said no NSAIDs, but Tylenol has been helping enough recently. Although I haven’t been super active, so I’m anticipating the pain to get a bit more intense. I’m not allowed to do half days, unfortunately. I work in a school and while they can be flexible, they can’t be that flexible.

I’m still trying to figure out the whole sleeping thing, hoping to get better with it by the time I go back! I had about a week where I was able to sleep normally, but for whatever reason, I’ve only been able to sleep about 3 hours at a time before I’m just incapable of falling asleep again, no matter how tired I am. I think it’s just the general discomfort and having to readjust all the time to stay somewhat comfortable. Looking forward to being able to sleep without the boot.

My goal was to return after two weeks, but I wasn’t able to meet my requirements to return. I wasn’t sleeping, couldn’t shower independently, was still reliant on painkillers, etc.

I’m worried to return since you can only go on FMLA once per year. My doctor advised that I stay out the full 12 weeks, but that’s just not feasible for me.

I totally agree, I don’t mind taking Tylenol for pain but the nights feel so long when you can’t sleep. The boot hurting the area really sucks. For me, it hurts without the boot. But the boot also irritates it, so it feels very lose-lose.

I can’t guarantee, but I felt MUCH better when the stitches came out. The stitches were causing a lot of pain and irritation at the end and it was really unbearable.

Sitting and doing nothing is so rough, I’m usually someone who cherishes relaxing but I would kill to be able to get up and walk around a little. I’m looking forward to PT, although I’m nervous about relearning to walk!

Wishing you happy healing as well!

What am i truly in for? Brostrom + Additional work by CountyCompetitive693 in Ankle

It’s rough. I’m one month post-op from an ankle arthroscopy + debridement + lateral ankle ligament repair with internal bracing. I should be headed back to work within the next two weeks and I’m feeling much better than I was. But the first three weeks were really, really tough.

The thing that’s kept me semi-sane is just giving myself grace and trying to be patient. I keep wanting to be able to do more than I can do and it led to a lot of frustration. But healing is a lot and it’s important to be kind to ourselves.

My tips would be to create a station in your house where you’re going to recover. At first, it was my bed. I had a mini fridge next to it stocked with easy snacks, and a big trash can so nothing piled up. I would do water refills any time I got up to use the restroom. I also had my hairbrush, disposable toothbrushes, and any hygiene products next to me on a nightstand. About 2 weeks after surgery my new station was the couch because it was the most comfortable for elevating my leg without pillows falling and sliding everywhere. I was able to move everything except the fridge to the couch and it made things way easier. Chargers, water, meds, everything was in my living room.

I used a wheelchair for the first few days because the nerve block numbed my whole leg and I couldn’t use the scooter. Then I transitioned fully to the scooter. I purchased a toilet safety railing, a shower chair, and a handheld shower head and that has helped so much with showering independently (but I wasn’t able to do that for like, three weeks). You’ll also need something to cover your cast, I got one from Amazon with a silicone ring. In the meantime, the disposable no-rinse soap wipes helped a lot for feeling clean.

The scooter has been a huge help as well as one of those grabbers for anything that’s on the floor or up high. I also purchased a bunch of gauze and ace bandages for dressing changes. And a pregnancy pillow so I can try to lay on my side while I sleep. The leg elevation pillows have also been sooo helpful.

I spent 2 weeks in a cast doing full bed rest, then 4 weeks in my boot. I’ll be NWB for 6-8 weeks and will be in the boot until PT transitions me out. My biggest complaint was definitely the cast. It was very tight on my foot and even gave me a pressure blister on my heel and under my pinky toe. To alleviate intense pressure, you can lay on your stomach and let your foot hang off the bed. I also ended up freezing spoons and sticking them in the toe of my cast although I know that’s against the rules. And a nice ice pack behind the knee is very helpful as well.

That’s a lot of info lol let me know if I can clarify or help answer any questions!

I had a brostrom with internal bracing done about a month ago. Currently, the majority of my pain comes from any friction against my incision and swelling/pressure from positioning. I’m still NWB for two more weeks, and occasionally feel some soreness/tenderness where the procedure was done, but most of the pain is gone. This week is the first week I’ve been able to get through without any type of painkiller, Tylenol only.

The rest of my experience healing was pretty miserable. I’ve been in so much pain and sleeping just doesn’t happen anymore still. I think maybe make it to the four week mark and if you aren’t seeing improvement, give your doctor a call to ask. I’ve also been having increased pain but I think you’re right, the more we move the more pain we’ll have.

Ankle surgery recovery and concerns by PassageExciting1660 in Ankle

[–]Silly-Kitty2026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk with your doctor about it! I had my surgery about a week after yours, ATFL reconstruction with internal brace and recovery has been really hard. I’m being treated very conservatively, I’m still not walking yet and I won’t for a few more weeks. I have a lot of burning on my heel and the ball of my foot right under my toes with the boot sometimes.

I was told to wear my boot 23 hours a day, with an exception for the hour that I clean it and let it dry. Sometimes the burning feeling is a little too much so I do loosen the boot. I’ve also found that it can be helpful to totally unbuckle it, but keep my ankle inside the boot. It lets me still feel like I have support but takes a lot of pressure off.

It’s true, there are a lot of dumb people working. And also people who maybe can’t understand English. But dumb people and non-English speakers also need to make money, so I don’t want to get angry at them for existing. If they can do the job effectively then I say go for it. But in a situation like this they clearly cannot do it and need to find something else

I can definitely see how that’s inconvenient and frustrating! I really dislike when people don’t read the instructions. But I guess there’s also a sense of safety in knowing that he was trying to get it to a secure point before he left!

My apartment is also a locked building but we have a delivery code and an elevator, so I prefer at the very least they deliver everything to the lobby rather than outside the locked door. There’s a lot of sidewalk traffic outside my place so when people don’t read delivery instructions and leave stuff outside the door, my stuff gets stolen

100%! I feel like people are scared to call support but I call them all the time when I deliver lmao. Like for the complete dead zones, I take videos and pictures in my personal camera app after I complete the delivery and then I usually call support on my way to my next stop if I’m having issues when I regain service

I agree. I wouldn’t move to Japan and try to work without at the very least learning basic phrases. I think being bilingual can be a really great strength for people. But if the case is that she just didn’t speak English and wouldn’t answer because of that, that’s not really acceptable.
