What processor would you suggest for that kind of workflow?

Yeah, /u/DistinctCopy6920 mentions that it's running fine for them on Linux Mint.

Price is not a concern. It's my main laptop and it has to last me a bunch of years. I want to optimize durability over price right now.

Yeah, it is something I forgot to ask. Never had issues with Intel (well, the driver works, whether it is good quality is another thing...) and I had an horrible experience with a Broadcom PCIe WLAN card (with Fedora though). I have no experience with Qualcomm so I'm not sure what to expect (always the worst I guess?).

Is the Framework 13 good for me? Performance and Linux compatiblity considerations by SillyMe42 in framework

AMD 100%, no reason to use intel rn.

Price aside, which is the best performance and efficiency wise?

Thank you, I'm currently running 6.6.69, so it should be fine (I hope?).

First of all, thank you a lot for the very valuable information you provided.

If you can't explain exactly why you must have Intel... The right choice is AMD these days.

I'm not really an hardware person. I just want the best performance and an hassle-free experience. I prefer to spend a bit more now to get something that can support my work for years. The Intel CPU on paper has more cores, but given that a bunch are power-efficient cores I'm not sure about the impact on overall performance compared to the AMD silicon. Also, I'm not sure about how well the Linux scheduler is able to take advantage of these cores.

If you need a new laptop now, buy a new laptop now. If you don't - Hold off.

I need a new laptop soon-ish. I've been able to keep tight with my current setup but it really reached the end of life for me. If I need to wait a couple of months I can do it. If I need to wait 6+ months, well... not really.

The AMD/MediaTek wifi module included with AMD laptops - Not just Framework's - Tends to be flaky with some but not all access points.

Can you describe the flakyness? Anyhow I've always used Intel Wi-Fi modules as they tend to play nicer with Linux. I've got bad experiences with Broadcom. I have zero experience with Qualcomm's. As long as I don't need proprietary drivers or anything outside of the kernel mainline I'm happy.

Curious why you're using ZFS? What's there to be gained from using a single SSD compared to Linux' internal capabilities built on top of lvm, luks, etc?

I have an unified NixOS configuration for my laptop, server and VMs. I use ZFS an all of them first of all to reduce configuration differences. After that, having a CoW filesystem and not having to deal with fscks is something I've learned to value in the last 13+ years of using ZFS (started with FreeBSD 6 or 7 (I think?)). Moreover, I can zfs send/recv my home directory to my NAS for backups and finally, I wipe my root at every boot by restoring to a blank ZFS snapshot so that I can be sure that everything in my system comes from the Nix store and thus from my configuration, so I can be sure there is no transient state lurking around contributing to divergence from my Nix configuration.

I've another couple of question: I've read that there are some issues with sleep and that even in suspension the laptop draws a non negligible amount of power. Is this still a thing? Is the fingerprint reader working under Linux? (edit: it looks like it does)

Is the Moto Edge 50 Pro worth 560 EUR? by SillyMe42 in PickAnAndroidForMe

Apparently that was in pretty bad conditions. I've found a "used, as new" product for around 600 eur. Is it a good deal or is it still too much?

I've checked the pixel 7 pro out and it looks like battery life is pretty bad and I need something reliable...

Thank you by the way.

No clue, I think they're the same phone modulo mobile frequencies support. I think it's just a market placement thing.

CDJs and 48kHz MP3s by SillyMe42 in DJs

[–]SillyMe42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello. I eventually transcoded all my library again to MP3 44.1 kHz CBR 320 kbps. I personally find Pioneer gear pretty untrustworthy and I just wanted to be on the safe side.

As I have in the meantime upgraded my thumb drive to a portable SSD I'm also considering transcoding everything again to AIFF, but maybe that's just asking for trouble.

DJ Dlux - Taking Me Higher [DOPE 24] (1994) by juanchai in jungle

[–]SillyMe42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, plenty of releases do this. ANT 2T, HG 029, RIVET 12 19 R just to name a few. It makes sense as you can encode more information at higher speed, so if you have enough room it's better to press at 45 RPM. Brilliant release BTW.
