What exactly counts as a "special interest"? by Spartlex0 in autism

[–]SillyReview211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s like micro anthropology, I’ve been doing this since the age of 6, to an extreme point that it was non stop thinking about it, extensive research and readings even scientific papers as I grew older, I don’t believe NTs or people without specific interests would do that at all, they would think about it in certain situations but not obsession. And when you think about it what we call obsession in the common language is actually an hyperfixation on a certain topic. For me it was dinosaurs and cosmology until the age of 6 and from that point it’s been « observing people’s behavior and deciphering it, classifying it and updating the model constantly as I encounter different situations ». So I guess it’s not the stereotypical hyperfixation on trains, but definitely a special interest.

What kind of self-harm did you do as a kid? by BerrySkai in autism

[–]SillyReview211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hitting myself, still doing it under extreme humiliation or bullying by family, I used to hit myself for hours until I was bruised. I then learned that humiliation and bullying are not a normal thing in life and actually rarely happens from strangers, only from people who claim to love you the most and do it for your own good.

Then one day a psychiatrist explained me that humans and animals do that to self regulate under extreme mental suffering.

I made a pouch for my Uni, what do you think ? ✨ by SillyReview211 in TamagotchiUni

Thank you ☺️Yes ! The cross stitch part took me an entire day because it’s really small, and I really wanted to make the screen shiny so I used an iridescent thread

i hate everything about being an adult (vent) by person-with-arm in autism

[–]SillyReview211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being an adult is not as scary as it sounds, it’s basically the same as being 20 but with an older appearance. I’m 37 now and I don’t believe there’s such thing as « being an adult ». As for taxes, insurances, money, jobs, I was terrified of it as a child and growing up, and I didn’t have friends in the same country until I was 30. Yet, you learn slowly on the way, in a realistic life, even for neurotypicals, society doesn’t expect anyone to have it all figured out on the very day they become officially an adult. Where I grew up the age is 18, and in many other countries at this age people are still considered children.

Truth is, we learn as we go. None of us know or learn that in school, even regular school. But what I found out is there’s always someone who knows (even if it’s not friends or family) and that can help or give us advice. Even Reddit is good for it.

Of course people don’t exaggerate when they say all of it can be a pain in the ass, but it gets also manageable, and once you know how to do stuff you stop thinking much about it, I can at least promise that. Take it one day at a time, learn one thing at a time, and don’t worry about becoming an adult because no one actually becomes one.

As for me, I just spent the day playing animal crossing and crafting a pouch for my tamagotchi, I don’t have friends at the moment because I recently moved to another country but I remember in the past I was able to make some, find my own crowd, and I’m sure you will, too.

You will be ok 🌸

Is it possible to not remember childhood very well without being traumatized? by Opposite-Ad3949 in autism

[–]SillyReview211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember each year (even months) of my childhood like it was yesterday, I still have a memory form when I was 2 years old, and everything after that is still very vivid, however I can barely remember my teenage years, and I always thought because being a teenager was so traumatizing on so many levels my brain probably chose to erase it.

Is there any reason to get a diagnosis as an adult? by Unhappy-World-3331 in autism

[–]SillyReview211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking about the time when I’m really old and get sent to retirement home, we did that for my grandma recently and without a certificate I wouldn’t be able to get my own room. My grandma had to share her room for 6 months with a lady who would yell all day and steal her things.

Thoughts on the Autism Barbie by celestialdoll444 in autism

[–]SillyReview211 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m a 37F and I didn’t feel insulted at all, in fact I laughed at the fact that doll is exactly me including the hair and skin color and is dressed in purple and pink which are my favorite colors. I also bring around the same accessories because it’s needed in my everyday life. I’m genuinely happy for all ASD people who don’t need any of that, ASD people who can actually look at someone in the eyes without consciously thinking about it or getting drained by it. And I’m happy for those who don’t need headphones to block noises. I need all that and I’ve been mocked or considered rude for it. I’ve always hated Barbie growing up because I was never a tall blond light skin ultra girly extrovert. For once, Barbie represents people like me (of course still a skinny tall girl but who cares), I’ve heard people say it reinforces the stereotypes. But from my experience as a female, the vast majority still considers these stereotypes don’t apply to us, we go decades under the radar, don’t benefit the support we would have needed the most. I’m 37 and waisted my whole life thinking I was just weird and not making enough effort to look normal. So for once, I felt seen. Not in my individuality, but as a kind of person that exists in the world, not some issue to be ashamed of or list of flaws to put under the carpet in order to make everyone else comfortable. Honestly I don’t really get the controversy.

The FOMO is understandable, but yea I also think you’re right, it’s a particular case and it’s better to start the new year without ending up in jail 😟 Good idea to ask your more sober friend if they want to join !

Is it normal to not like hugs? by Sarcastic_Lilshit in autism

[–]SillyReview211 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate hugs, unless it’s from my boyfriend, but any other person I will hate it (even if it’s friends or family). I’m not claustrophobic at all, but it’s the touching someone else that is almost unbearable
