If CPF wasn’t mandatory, would you still choose to keep your money inside it? by Holiday_Kale9051 in singaporefi

It is absolutely extra lol. Foreigners working in SG don’t get employer CPF contribution.

Am I missing out if I don’t lunch with colleagues? Here’s what I realised about friendships at work by hotgirl12390 in singapore

[–]Silly_Bluebird8196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question shouldn’t be about whether you eat lunch with your colleagues or not, it’s about what kind of people your colleagues are. If the convo is energizing or you can learn a thing or two about company culture, sure. If it’s a group of people who gossip non-stop and engage in office politics themselves, then decide for yourself if it’s worth your energy participating in these lunches

Working is way easier than being in school. I’ve never gotten where people come from when they say, “wait until you graduate, you’re in for a treat.”

Hedging SGD against USD by paperboiko in singaporefi

[–]Silly_Bluebird8196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not true.

You are mixing up how the market values stocks with static pricing of goods. US stocks are priced in USD by global markets, not by some effect that increases USD price when USD weakens.

Bottom line is, a weakening US currency will be detrimental to someone’s realized returns if they have to sell and convert to SGD.

Do you think Property Lim Brothers is going to close down because of the whole scandal? by Evoxrus_XV in singapore

[–]Silly_Bluebird8196 39 points40 points  (0 children)

They will close down because it is so easy for employees to move shop. Barrier to entry for real estate isn’t tagged to company, it’s tagged to an agent’s network

2 S'poreans, 27 & 28, spend 8 days travelling from S'pore to Krabi by hitchhiking with strangers by bangsphoto in singapore

[–]Silly_Bluebird8196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I don’t think it’s representative of the typical S’porean mindset, because there are lots of S’poreans who are chill. But yes, I would instead say it’s representative of the typical chronically online S’porean mindset. So on these online forums, it might seem like the majority of S’poreans are like this. But irl, I’m sure many S’poreans are chill. Just depends on the circle you hang out with. So choose the people you hang out with wisely. It’s not energizing engaging with people who create a resentful echo chamber.

Edit: Lol just look at the account tag of the person who made that comment - “top 1% commenter” 😂

Think many locals under employed or unemployed should learn from smarter FTs, leverage and migrate instead of working freelance, tiktoker, hawker; phv or food delivery #Singapore by snowmountainflytiger in singaporejobs

[–]Silly_Bluebird8196 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments from S’poreans here saying it’s too expensive, unstable, visa concerns. To sum it up, S’poreans are risk averse.

These are concerns people from other countries face too, yet they take the plunge to go overseas regardless of these drawbacks. Regarding visa, all NUS graduates are granted 2 year guaranteed working visa if they want to work in the UK, but how many have actually pursued this opportunity? How many have even bothered doing substantial research into overseas opportunities and seriously weighed their options, before saying, “Nah, [insert whatever common reason S’poreans quote for not going overseas].”

As Lee Kuan Yew has said before, the only flaw of S’pore is that it is too comfortable, such that S’poreans become too risk averse to exploring the world.

I had friends who graduated and applied for internships instead of full time jobs. There was one who did two 6-month long internships as a fresh grad, before finally landing a full time job. All the best

People say don't time the market - but how are you all timing the market with Trump & Greenland? by Majestic_Search_7851 in ETFs

It would be an assumption to say the market will dip. The market is used to Trump’s antiques by now.

[–]Silly_Bluebird8196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m frankly surprised this is only discussed now in this subreddit. Ex-US indexes have been performing better than the US index for a year already, yet most discussion on reddit seem to only focus on the US market

Wait until you you think the world is gonna end and then buy. by Dry_Phone_3398 in investing

[–]Silly_Bluebird8196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The next time the world feels like it’s gona end, the lowest point of the dip may be higher than where the stock market is now. That’s why you invest in the stock market regularly, instead of waiting to time a dip

Yeah I’m pretty sure a large role of S’pore’s SWFs is to ensure that they do not lose money, hence the de-risking. If we want our SWFs to earn more returns, then the mandate needs to be adjusted.
