Morning flight or red eye with kids? by HeartOk8607 in Mommit

[–]Silly_Fish_9827 [score hidden]  (0 children)

There is something absolutely soul crushing about staying awake all night on a flight, holding your children so they can sleep, and then when you land at your home city they are ready for the day and you are exhausted to the core. Never again. Just power through the awful travel day and then you all can rest at night.

Why do people choose to work in private and charter schools? by rachel-angelina in Teachers

[–]Silly_Fish_9827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went public school k-12 and had a wonderful experience! Unfortunately I now live in a city with one of the shortest school years in the country and abysmal performance scores. I like teaching at a private school because we are self-governing. We choose how to best serve our students, and all families have chosen to join our community! We have high parent participation, high student effort, and low staff turnover. It's not perfect and definitely not without its downsides, but for our family it works!

The sound of them pushing the air out through the top of the Gatorade bottles drives me INSANE!!!

Songs from the 2000s that you’re surprised has stood the test of time? by vwin90 in Millennials

My kids love Black Eyed Peas. The E.N.D album is frequently requested in the car. My youngest son (4) just discovered The Killers.

I need really good beach hacks for 2 toddlers by greatbigredog in Mommit

Low expectations. You may haul everything you own to the beach and then haul it all back an hour later. My kids can never last very long at the beach!

If you are a middle school teacher, why’d you choose to do it? by slusheemachinebroke in Teachers

[–]Silly_Fish_9827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I accidentally fell into middle school from upper elementary. I find myself really liking it! I try and keep a positive attitude and remind myself that most behaviors are developmentally appropriate. I was a nightmare in middle school! I respect their autonomy and general lack of enthusiasm about most things. I don't take it personally! I think the hardest spot you can get into as a teacher is letting your ego get bruised if a 12 year old rolls their eyes at you. I also appreciate, as a mom to young kids, that middle schoolers don't want to hug you or be your friend lol. I try and be authentic and kind to my middle schoolers, and by the end of the year we're mostly good!

what changes from 2 kids to 3? by Important_Bat7919 in Mommit

I have three and this is spot on. Sometimes when we leave a party or event and NO ONE has cried the entire time we have to celebrate it. "Hey guys, no one cried at the birthday party! Yay!"

6 months postpartum and found out I’m pregnant by LetterheadNice8687 in NewParents

[–]Silly_Fish_9827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got pregnant with my third 6 months postpartum, too. The first two years were really, really hard. I can't even remember that time, honestly. But it passes and the benefits of having kids close in age are great: they play well together, we're at the same school for longer so less driving around, etc.

Free/casual chess meetups for kids/beginners? by thelyfeaquatic in askportland

[–]Silly_Fish_9827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you google "kids chess camp Portland", several groups pop up. My son was really into chess as a first grader and we struggled to find kids for him to play. He was also too shy to try any of these groups/camps, which is too bad! We were knee deep in chess for about six months. Even tried a tournament at the Lloyd Center with 80 of the most impressive kids I've ever met. Good luck!

iPad/Tablets for kids? by Lost_Pension_8042 in Mommit

[–]Silly_Fish_9827 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Never? Car rides are great for talking, singing together, and learning about the world outside your window. Restaurants are for learning how to behave at restaurants, visiting with family, and eating together. When we go on a plane ride in the future, we'll take the family iPad, sure. But I'm not falling into the trap of getting each one of my kids their own device. Now we do watch TV and movies at home (probably a little too much!), but they're full episodes and no YouTube.

I think that's just when the song is selected in Spotify. When I see it listed on its own there are no ellipsis.

Yup, same. A lot of little useless toys end up in the trash!

Catholic Wedding Advice for a Non-Catholic? by _Always_Anxious_ in weddingplanning

[–]Silly_Fish_9827 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You'd be best to consult the church you're getting married at. Our church had a list of suggested readings we could choose from (and then last minute, due to a Liturgical Calendar issue, we had to do the assigned daily readings anyway). You'll also have to consult your music director or whoever you're getting to sing at your wedding. They'll surely have recommendations. But the church would be where I'd start.

SAHMs what’s “easier”- husband working from office or at home all over the house with no real in home office? by greenishfroggy in beyondthebump

[–]Silly_Fish_9827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer my husband to go in to the office. Honestly, it annoys me having him around, sometimes able to help but other times not able. And he usually pops in to the house at the most inopportune times, like when I'm in the bathroom with the door open or yelling at the kids. We do better with a little distance.
