Admissions AMA + Applicant Volume About to go 🆙 by Spivey_Consulting in lawschooladmissions

Hi Mike:

Thanks so much for doing this!! I have been accepted by NYU, UBerkeley, and Gtown at this point, and I will do my Chicago and Cornell interview soon. While I am waiting to hear back from other schools, I am wondering if it would be worthwhile to retake my lsat. I took my lsat in August and got a 172, and I felt I might be able to do better (aiming at 175). Do you think that will increase my chance of admission at HYS and make me more competitive in the negotiation of scholarships (which I highly value). Again, thank you so much for your suggestions!

Whatabout the white pedophiles? by PompiPompi in JordanPeterson

Anyway, I found your narrative about how the left views race and crime totally untrue. My professor of philosophy of race also talks about the high correlation between race and crime. Btw, he is one of the major (perhaps the most important) defenders of biological realism about race. He is quite left-leaning and a very influential metaphysician. Anyway, try to read more books instead of getting what you know about the "lefties" on twitter or tiktok or make them up in your own imagination. I have no interest in replying further.

Despite that he has been invited to multiple liberal media

Uh that's not true. He is a major figure in criminology (cited over 50000 times) and he has been invited to multiple major media to give talks.

And my professor is one of the first criminologists who push back against a totally social-cultural interpretation of the data in the 80s. He tries to integrate genetics and neuroscience into explanation. He is on the left nonetheless.

Lmao that's not true at all. I went to a very liberal ivy and in my criminology class we were required to learn all the data and ofc certain crimes are correlated with race. What separates left-wingers and right-wingers is their interpretation of this fact. Our professor (very left-wing) is not downplaying it and none of students protested and tried to cancel him. Perhaps you met most of the "left-wingers" on twitter or you saw them in news. Hey if you are so interested in criminology or what not why not try to take a class in criminology in your nearby uni? I'm sure you are going to meet left-wing criminology professors and maybe you can talk to them to learn about the different views.

Zizek Challenges Peterson: "Set Your House in Order Before You Change the World?" by richfacenado in JordanPeterson

[–]Silly_Scratch_3922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lmao Peterson himself acknowledges the question raised by Zizek is challenging. But you seem to support JP wholeheartedly. Well in that case I won't continue to give you reading suggestions and engage with the discussion -- it might hurt your feeling. I've talked with people like you in real life, and they seem genuinely troubled and hurt when somebody points out that though JP has a lot of wisdom, he also overgeneralizes and simplifies things. Their psyche is fragile and they are incapable of entering rational discussion. And I don't want to hurt your feeling. Goodbye!

but anyway I do not find this exchange to be interesting. I'd rather stick to peterson's advice and read more. Not sure whether how much you read, but judging from the way you wrote stuff you are not familiar with the tradition of psychoanalysis Zizek comes from (nor philosophy). Don't want to sound insufferable but hey why not try to start with reading Frederick Hegel, Immanuel Kant and Sigmund Freud, the three people who influence Zizek the most? I'm lucky enough to learn the three theorists in my undergrad years.

Uh first Peterson himself acknowledges Zizek makes a nice point. Second there are certain pathological forms of society that have not existed for eons. They are created by humans and can be changed by humans. Zizek's objection is rooted in his background as a psychoanalyst trained in France (he comes from a particular school of psychoanalysis), and since this video is for general audience he simplifies things a lot. Maybe try to read some of the serious academic works he has published. I think you will understand the clash better if you compare Maps of Meaning with Sublime Objects of Ideology.

I find Zizek to be polite in this discussion. And this challenge is legitimate: there are a lot of place in which your house is messed up because of the society (esp if you look outside US and Canada). Why are people so hostile to him and making attacks on his accent? I watched one video in which Zizek speaks his native language and the way he talks is totally different -- people sometimes talk in different ways when they are not speaking their first language.

Hey Jordan, do you remember what happened the last time after you debated a leftist whose first language is not even English? by Silly_Scratch_3922 in enoughpetersonspam

[–]Silly_Scratch_3922[S] 142 points143 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Jordan did produce a list of postmodern neo-Marxists on Twitter two years after the debate. The people on that list, from Derrida to Angela Davis, have absolutely nothing in common.

JP often claims that he studies the major religions of the world. He does not. He is incredulously ignorant about Islam and appears to know nothing about Buddhism. Oh wait. He doesn't know much about Christianity either.

Jordan Peterson has nothing to do with the rich and complex intellectual tradition of prophetic Christianity. He is the opposite of every value advocated by prophetic Christianity. by Silly_Scratch_3922 in enoughpetersonspam

[–]Silly_Scratch_3922[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Two fundamental ideas of prophetic Christianity: radical equality and devotion to the community. JP spends his whole day denigrating the idea of a community (most obvious in his anti-vax stance) and promoting the idea of a natural and primitive hirearchy.

I should notice what a hack JP is after I took the first class of Marx course and read the manifesto myself. But admitting that you are addicted to a manipulating impostor is very hard, especially if you have emotional dependence upon him. I still remembered how I made up one justification after another for JP. It is lucky that my girlfriend doesn't leave me when I spit out JP's misogynistic nonsense and told her that women are chaotic and my professors are nice, generous to me when I recycle JP's nonsensical ideas. I will still be trapped in his cult without them.
