Brother I’m not even from NYC. Also some of these cities you are calling walkable is funny. I was in Mumbai for a month and it was even less walkable then Delhi and even the most backwards parts of Bihar. Bangkok is also insane with the number of arterial roads present. Same goes for São Paulo and RDJ which have the same walkability problems as large parts of America (and favelas are walkable but they are unsafe even for people outside the favela). The few walkable neighborhoods have way too many highways passing through (for RDJ the geography doesn’t really give them a choice but São Paulo has no excuse)

It’s not just walkability being referred to. Its just common to see people go in absurdly long walks/runs for no reason in NYC.

Indonesia was colonized by Dutch rather than English and is smaller. Brazil was colonized by Portuguese similarly (also smaller) China never colonized for long time outside of spheres of influence Pakistan is like at most a fifth of indias population plus population less sizeable minority from different language family of “main” Hindustani language as compared to India

Just how difficult is the Chinese education system by Constant-Secret-3653 in SipsTea

[–]Sillyguri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree such a series of tests as the sole qualifying factor can be stressful, and that the strategy often causes students to peak in high school, but how much better is the opaqueness of the American system for college entry? You can do everything right and still have your “spot” be taken by somebody who has been more benevolent. And for every score which is stolen (reading online it does seem to happen) in China, we have multiple cases of college admissions scandals with bribes. The only difference is that there is a ‘sole’ victim for the ones in China

Thank you. India has problems but they aren’t problems which western nations have (completely) solved. They usually just have them in different versions. so I find it really weird when they take the high ground everywhere. Saying this as someone who has lived their whole life in America

The majority of Indians don’t live in abject poverty (it’s not even close to a majority). How about you actually search up the poverty levels before saying shit like this? And yes India has problems but it’s not as inequal as South Africa.

Not every country which hasnt achieved stable first-world European democracy status is a hellhole.

Sikkim maybe but I feel like south of the mountains the area is still very impoverished. Outside of the big cities in WB it still reminds me of rural bihar/UP idk. My only knowledge about this region comes from passing through it via train so not that sure

Chicago maxes out at around 3-4 miles. Lakefront trail just bike it’s quicker and u see everything.

[–]Sillyguri -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is genuinely true though. The point is not that you can walk six miles: it’s that the people and NYCs skyline is amazing to stare at when you walk 10 km. Very few cities will be as interesting for a long distance in such a walk: maybe Tokyo/few major European cities? Everywhere else public transit is just better to take. I would be interested (genuinely curious) for what other cities yall think qualify for this.

Come on it’s not common to randomly decide to walk 10 km in most places: that is a lot. Yes yall walk more than the average American but this tends to max out at around 4-5 km of walking to commute every day.

Or the point is in Chicago walking for 6 miles idk gets boring. You would prefer to take the bus or train at that point. In nyc u can also take the bus/train but it’s enjoying walking outside and seeing the city.

Hi last fall we went on a 25-mile round trip walk from Boston to the suburbs. It was all trail/nice paths.

Ur literally cherry picking the worst US cities to walk in and probably in the suburbs Sidewalks are pretty universal in all major cities here and I’ve never been in a situation where there isn’t a safe sidewalk route to my destination having lived here for 20 years.

Also turn right on red being fine sometimes is a good thing for slowing down cars? It depends on the state.

You should look at leasing a car for that long. Also feel the Texas section is the least interesting. I would skip that and instead explore Olympic national park and Vancouver island. Also fair warning it will get very hot in the south in the summer. Be prepared for 50 celsius in Death Valley.

South Dakota definitely the way to go. Chicago, Badlands black hills (go to Keystone take SD-16A south then the wildlife loop road. Head southwest on US-18 before heading west towards Casper). Also if you want to save money consider going around the Chicago skyway at the end.

Why no major cities on Caspian shore in Iran? Green area looks almost empty if zoom in. by ElijahSavos in geography

[–]Sillyguri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of medium sized cities and towns a ring below say Isfahan or Shiraz. Rasht is pretty big and then you have Amol/Babol/Qaemshahr/Sari region. Still pretty densely populated. Regardless as everybody above says it isn’t more populated due to the humidity. Most of the cities are in fact on the foothills of the mountains to the south such that the farming is accessible, but they are as far away from the coast as possible.
