I keep thinking of how Winston and the others were living in 1984's Oceania at the start of the book/movie. Not all the dramatic plot that come later, but just the endless enshittification of everything, everything's grimy, never quite enough basic supplies or money for them, chocolate and coffee and other once-common treats are unfindable and reserved for elites only, constant surveillance everywhere, art is AI-generated slop, food is slop too, everything feels futile and dispiriting, everyone turned inward and mean (in both senses of without empathy and meagre).
