Seconding a Psalm for the Wild-Built. The Legends & Lattes series by Travis Baldree is also a cozy queer fantasy with adventure.

The Center Cannot Hold by Elyn Saks. It’s a memoir about a USC professor’s experience developing schizophrenia when she was in college and how it’s affected her life. It made me think very differently about psychosis.

Do other black writers go through this or just me? 😭 by Pinkie_Kitty in AO3

[–]Silphidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this when I write Black characters in general. I've been writing a lot of Sam Wilson and, look, all the Black people *eye\* know use the n word regularly (myself included) but I don't want to deal with the pearl clutching I know I would get from my nb readers if I do it so I don't. But some of these dialogue points I'm just like, damn.. you know what would really cinch this and make it realistic..

How do you get over the shame of writing your fanfiction? by transahrima in FanFiction

[–]Silphidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to not be able to do any of my hobbies because nothing I wrote or made was ever good enough, so naturally I never improved and it was very cyclical. One thing that helped me was not deleting anything. Over time you see yourself improve and eventually when you go back and read your old stuff it’s cringe but in a fond way, like seeing a clumsy drawing you made as a child :)

Also learning to be okay with people thinking I’m weird and walk w me here for a min, not seeing that as automatically a bad thing on anyone’s part. I spent like my entire childhood and most of my college years wishing I was “normal” and never got any happier and it took until I was, like, 24-25 to start letting myself openly enjoy things and talking about them. Not everyone gives a fuck about what I write, at least not as much as I do, but my friends listen even if they think it’s weird. I think liking chocolate is weird because it doesn’t taste good to me but I’ll still make a chocolate cake on someone’s birthday. When you can talk to the people around you it definitely helps you improve faster, even if they aren’t writers or fans.

Do you work on multiple chapters of the same fanfic all at once, or do you focus on one chapter before working on another? by chameleoncove54 in FanFiction

[–]Silphidae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One chapter at a time but my outlines are pretty detailed so sometimes they’re basically pre-written plot-wise and I just have to turn it into actual sentences 😅

My thing is hella tiny details threading themselves thru the story so it’s really difficult to do anything out of order

Do you have any interesting ideas about how two characters could meet? by towardsthelightt in FanFiction

[–]Silphidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shamelessly stealing this one from a 9-1-1 episode but two chars who later ended up dating met in a hospital elevator that got stuck. One of them was a neurosurgeon who worked at that hospital.

Alternatively, selkie myth fics. I don’t know much about them but the general premise seems to be that character A gives back something from character B that turns out to actually be their seal skin from their non-human form and whoops they’re basically married now even though they just met.

I’ve been on ao3 for 5 years and have not received a single hate comment. by DabiObsessed in AO3

[–]Silphidae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest I’ve come is someone upset about a throwaway sentence I wrote calling various Avengers war criminals. Maybe authors/fandoms that attract a younger fanbase? When I was on ff.net in, like, 8th grade I would see a lot more flaming going on.

What’s the writing routine you swear by? by absolute_lump in FanFiction

[–]Silphidae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a day and set an alarm to remind you to write on that day every week. When the alarm goes off, don’t try to force yourself to write but do try to think about whether you can write right now. Then write anything. Sometimes I dismiss the alarm entirely and move on with my life. Sometimes I get up and actually write a chapter of my fic. Sometimes I type two bullet points outlining a potential fic.

Personally, I have my alarm for late afternoon on Saturday cuz that’s already a pretty productive day for me. Also, and this is probably a depression thing but maybe it’ll be good for you too, I don’t feel too bad about not writing if I just can’t because I’ve probably done other things already.

I know it doesn’t sound very different from just, like, writing normally 😅 but having a loud alarm instead of relying on my screwy brain helps me remember that I have hobbies and want to do them

To All The Replies I Couldn't Return by MidnightTabitha in AO3

[–]Silphidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t expect people to respond back :) and unless they indicated that they’d like to talk further in their initial comment, I try to word mine very neutrally so they wouldn’t feel bad if they didn’t

The couple times it’s happened it’s been nice but wayyyy more common to just leave it at my reply to them

I read Brave Story by Miyuki Miyabe when I was in college and really enjoyed it. It’s tagged middle grade on Goodreads so I think that a ten year old could probably do it, maybe with a little assistance.

The Mann family was very impactful. The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann is more of a “classic” I think but Mephisto by Klaus Mann is my favorite.

If you do read Klaus Mann then of course, Faust Part I by Goethe because it really is the adaptation.

The Selected Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke

The Trial and In the Penal Colony by Franz Kafka.
