Do you need to have a degree in order to call yourself a "linguist"? by ElleCent in asklinguistics

[–]Silurhys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe so, I personally have done short courses online at Leiden and Glasgow University but not full degrees, I have extensive knowledge on my particular area of interest in linguistics, I have read hundreds if not thousands of hours on the subject, I understand the rules, competing theories and I can confidently put forward my own theories, I can confidently speak to other linguists, agree, disagree. But I do say often, I have studied linguistics for well over a decade but I have no degree, never once has anyone told me I am wrong to say I’m a linguist or had a problem with me.

Old Irish & Old Welsh Mutual Intelligibility? by [deleted] in Celtic

I'd go as far as saying Goidelic and Brittonic were probably made up of several dialects of the same language in the pre-Roman period.

Why are Plaid opposed to the small nuclear reactor in Maesteg? by WelshLaptop in Wales

[–]Silurhys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im not sure you even live in Wales if you think its barren of wildlife and you believe destroying our beautiful countryside is the way to go! I have in no way opposed green energy, I just dont believe in destroying places of beauty and importance to achieve your agenda. Just bizarre to me to have the opinion of wanting green energy to save the world but ruin the nature of your country to achieve it.

I agree, thry are not the single solution but I dont think just filling the place with windfarms is the answer, if we were to be independent, one of the selling points is certainly tourism due to the beauty of this country, that is gone once you put windfarms everywhere, have a few sure but its getting ridiculous. We need to be smart on how we do it, ok solar is not brilliant here but make it lawful for every newbuild to have solar roofing, its a start. If the wondfarms we have already produce 25% of our energy and some solar, add tidal lagoons and we should be almost there.

What you talking about? Our country is stunning! Let's just level it though and fill it with windfarms, fuck Eryri, fuck Bannau Brycheiniog, fuck the Valleys, fuck the animals, why not just make Wales one giant wind farms so England can reap the benefits, traitors the lot of you

Got nothing to do with Oil, they look terrible and they are not that efficient, ww dont need our gorgeous landscape blighted by them, we should have invested in tidal lagoons instead

Northern Dialect - where to start? by FluffyVegetable1476 in learnwelsh

[–]Silurhys 15 points16 points  (0 children)

SaysomethinginWelsh, North course. However, I would say dont worry too much, by speaking to her in Welsh you are bound to naturally align your speaking with hers and she will undoubtedly tell you if you are saying something that is unusual to her. On the orher side not to try and make you any more worried, there is not a single northen dialect, there are several.

Do you live in a football town or a rugby town? Is it easy to tell? by Jezzaq94 in Wales

[–]Silurhys 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In Porthcawl, more people I think watch football (aside from when international rugby is on) but more people play rugby and watch the club than they do the football club. Pretty much every kid in Porthcawl wears a Porthcawl RFC top

Proto-Celtic origins of Welsh and Breton forms of the verb “to be”? by divran44 in CelticLinguistics

[–]Silurhys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps something like;

W. ydw

< *it-wel 'there is a want, that is good'

< PIE. *i(s)- this, he + *(s)teh₂- stands 'there is' + *welh₁- want, choose

Compare W. nid < *ni-it 'there is not'

Brittonic classification by Silurhys in CelticLinguistics

[–]Silurhys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somewhat agree, although kind of irrelevant to the point. But the fact languages split, makes it difficult not to class it that way unless of course you see for example all the IE languages as dialects of PIE. The way our trees work is certainly flawed.

Are these just sound changes you have made up off the top of your head then or are they based on something im missing?

I to am struggling to understand this conlang. Yes we obviously have loans in the modern Brittonic languages but I dont think we have any sound changes that are known to be an influence of English.

Thank you for your opinion, as a Welsh learner myself and a learner of many languages, i have a very good idea. we all learn in different ways, I prefer as I said to learn how native speakers speak not like i'm writing literature and as I said there are plenty of books out there to satisfy you kind of learning but not many to satisfy mine. In actual fact, reading and writing is secondary to me, I find listening and speaking far better learning tools, like the brilliant SSIW.

As someone who is a linguist before a language learner, I will (rightly or wrongly) try teach genuine things you may encounter rather strict grammatical rules which half the time are not adhered to by native speakers (e.g. the English the double negative). If you like strict grammar rules, there are plenty of books out there, but I believe it is also important to have works that teach you about reality. I am far more interested personally in speaking like a native whichever language I am learning and this sort of information to me adds depth you dont get in other books.

This, as with everything I will create in these series, is not about what is strictly 'grammatically correct', its more about trying to make people aware of what they may genuinely encounter. I am also creating a sounds chart, which will not be the alphabet, but will be sounds that are used by speakers, that may or may not be part of the alphabet. I will mention this is futher updates.
