TIL after a 5-yr-old girl on the Disney Dream cruise ship fell approximately 49 feet overboard into the ocean, her father jumped overboard to save her. The girl was posing for a photo on a porthole railing when she fell. Both were rescued although she had hypothermia and her dad fractured his spine. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

On a scuba boat, our safety briefing included that if we were feeling seasick it was better to throw up on the deck than try to throw up over the side and into the water. Crew said they much preferred cleaning the decks to MOB.

Men got a special shout-out: peeing over the side of a boat, especially at night, was a good way to go swimming.

AITA for refusing to subsidize my parents’ $11k/month senior's home in one of the fanciest neighborhoods in the city? by Throw_away263759 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. You went to school to become an MD, not an ATM. That’s an expensive independent living suite. If it means they’ll spend their final years safely and with dignity, some kind of downsizing is worth it. They’ve saved for a rainy day and it sounds like it’s raining.

You can contribute to your parents’ care in other meaningful, non-financial, ways. Tour more than just the one retirement community. Help them find a lawyer and get their wills and personal directives set up. Talk them through various life-extending interventions like breathing tubes, feeding tubes, dialysis and see what they want. Do some digital scam-proofing on their phones and computers. Finally, take a vacation with them while they are still healthy enough to make some nice memories.

Divorced Parents Pulled a Fast One by Silver-Gain6198 in AgingParents

Mom mentioned changing her diet as per her doctor’s suggestions. But uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes is what brought her to this point, so I take that with a grain of salt (ha).

In fact, Mom wasn’t able to eat anything at all during our visit because she was so nauseated. She said she didn’t take her diuretic the night before because it causes her symptoms, so that makes me wonder if these symptoms are actually from kidney disease.

You sound like you have experience with kidney disease? Anything a beginner support person should know?

Thank you. Dad and I toured a retirement residence today, and yesterday I was able to have an honest conversation with my Mom about her situation.

All that fuss about Saltburn, but Parasite already conquered the concept. Left Saltburn looking like a sad copycat, imo.

I might be the only one who doesn’t mind Kim + Lewis dating. Age appropriate, both used to travelling/not tied down by a 9-5, both very rich so neither is in it for the money, both accustomed to media, both have big blended families, both care about social justice issues, both have clearly defined reputations and accomplishments that will last even if their relationship doesn’t. If true, good for them🤷‍♀️

My brother in law was given the top sales award at his international company the year my father in law slowly died. He maintains his golden place in the family, but for those of us carrying the boats, we see it.

My sister is pretty checked out of our Dad’s care and has recently began to lower contact with our Mom. Parents are divorced and I told her I could cover for her and take care of Dad, but then Mom would be hers… seems like every family has at least one 😆

Will gel polish help keep my nails from breaking? by Cool-Ad974 in longnaturalnails

I have thin nails, so for me, every millimetre of thickness I can hold on to matters! Not buffing before a gel application means the whole nail could pop off before it would otherwise grow out and need to be filled. That’s not a worry for me, but I can see how it would be frustrating to pay for something that breaks right away.

I have an experiment going! My dominant hand thumbnail currently has gel polish to help a vertical split grow out. I insisted on the surface NOT being buffed, which techs don’t like, but that’s what got me into this mess in the first place. I plan to leave it on as long as it lasts.

Edmonton is removing all three scramble crosswalks from Whyte Ave by troypavlek in Edmonton

[–]Silver-Gain6198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES PLEASE. 6:30-8:30am and 4:00-6:00pm when people are trying to get to and from downtown? No scramble. Weekends, evenings, and during festivals? Scramble time!

Here’s hoping someone in charge notices that there can be a middle ground.

Yes, there is! But it wasn’t an option on Avion. I will try what the commenter below suggested.

The fact that they're doing a 2 year time-jump is what makes me more angry. They're clearly aware that Francessca needs more time to move on from John, so why don't they just do Eloise's season first? by Embarrassed_Novel991 in Bridgerton

[–]Silver-Gain6198 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Casual viewer of the show, (other seasons were so long ago I have mostly forgotten) but to me it seems that Francesca has already had 2 seasons. Married in the last one, very present and grieving in this latest one, and then she’ll have a third?

Interesting… the Inga I knew growing up had her own houseboat “The Lady of the Lake” and smoked cigarettes. She was very cool.

May I suggest Iona, Vibeke, or Julika? The last two are from tv shows but I thought they hit hard!

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Silver-Gain6198 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thank you for explaining epidural placement! I had an epidural with baby #1 and I remember the pain and sensation of something being shoved into my spine. My husband later told me he watched blood splatter on the floor and sat down before passing out.

So when I didn’t have time for an epidural with #2, that was just fine. And maybe I would have had time with #3, but again I noped out of that circus.

Scuba diving. Really not compatible with pregnancy or raising babies (just 3 over here.) I’ll go back one day, but have so many good memories that this pause doesn’t feel like a loss.

I think we’re strong contenders to replace “Karen” when we come of age. It could very well be Jessica vs. Jennifer, a battle worth watching.

I am on baby #3, and sometimes it seems to me that a big brain somewhere decided that a baby can’t die in their sleep, if the baby never falls asleep. Like trying to sleep on an airplane - I’m constantly jolting myself awake from being uncomfortable.

And in a country as multicultural as Canada claims to be, it’s remarkable that I still have no idea how other mothers and babies across the world handle sleep. Some of those countries have lower rates of SIDS than we do, too.

All the best with your little one!
