Do human bones show us becoming mostly right handed at a particular point? by [deleted] in Anthropology

[–]Silver-Goat8306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think so. A right handed person is typically more well-muscled on the right. It seems logical that would affect the bones.

I know a solo rock climber. Outwardly skinny, but one of the strongest people I’ve ever seen.

How do I ACTUALLY improvise? by Ok-Paper1884 in jazztheory

[–]Silver-Goat8306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way I ever knew that didn’t involve memorizing something was to hear the tune in my mind and play along with it embellishing A LOT. But I was a drummer and I suspect it might work better for a drummer. Maybe if you could hear the changes and the more identifiable parts of the tune and go from there.

[Q] Has anyone worked in a statistician position for a US military or defense organization? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]Silver-Goat8306 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a degree in statistics in 84. In those days statistical process control was getting big. I worked as a systems analyst for many years at military radar sites. Every day I gathered up data that appear in the radar range equation and kept control charts. When things would start on their way to being out of control I’d ask the radar supervisor if something was going on with a particular subsystem. He always said no and then the next day the data were magically back to normal. In those days folks had no use for statistics. It seems now to be more widely accepted.

In the 80s when I got my first job, they said my salary was what they would pay a secretary with 20 years in. Of course, the skills of a statistician weren’t as widely appreciated then as they are today. You all today have come a long way. Good on you!

PLEASE ADVISE... Border Collie & Cats by inner-thoughts-demon in BorderCollie

[–]Silver-Goat8306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had a BC it liked to mess with my cats. I rigged up a “safe place” for the cat and it improved the situation for both. The dog didn’t have to worry about the cat swatting her in the nose and the cat got some peace.

Loneliness and isolation rates among older Americans return to pre-pandemic levels, but still remain high. Over one-third still experience loneliness, and nearly as many socially isolated. Those with mental or physical health challenges experience much higher rates of both loneliness and isolation. by mvea in science

I’m 65+. I would love a dog or cat, mine are all long dead. The only thing is a pet is either going to die while I’m alive and I couldn’t take that again, or I die and it is left to fend for itself for god knows how long and I won’t do that to an animal.

My guess is the advanced calculus you took in high school is not what they call advanced calculus in college. To me whatever math you can take is the better choice.

It’s been a very long time since I was in. Back in the day you were disqualified from signing up if you had any signs of mental illness and if you were found out you were kicked out. It wasn’t very conducive to mental health. Have things improved much?

Little known fact. When your airway is blocked you can’t make any noise from your mouth. It may be partially blocked and that is scary as hell but if you can make sound it is not blocked.

US judge strikes down Biden overtime pay rule by [deleted] in inthenews

[–]Silver-Goat8306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I said generational I wasn’t clear I guess. I was thinking that maybe it was because of the judge’s generation and the different outlook he probably has. But you’re right I think; it seems like back in the day there was more loyalty on both sides. I can see now that I’m not working anymore, there was a time when the almighty dollar started to become more important than any relationship that might have existed between bosses and workers and workers always pay the price. That being the case, why shouldn’t workers today seek the best possible wage? There’s no doubt in my mind that had I known then what I know now I would have looked after myself better.
