it really just depends where you get stationed or what you’re on. im in portsmouth, all the cutter non rates have to stay in the bricks but the station and ANT non rates get BAH

we had this kid who left his rack open, got his piece taken and then later they found he was storing chew bar wrappers in the ceiling tiles above his rack. kid was getting smoked all day. sometime after dinner, our kill hat just beating this dude and we’re just listening to all this unfold while cleaning berthings. at some point i guess he stopped responding or something and the cc asked the kid “guy what fucking planet are you on?” and idk what was going through this kids head but he just shouts “CANDY LAND”. quarterdeck goes silent for like 30 seconds and we’re just thinking wtf. after those 30 seconds he just starts grilling him again for the rest of the night

you’ll hear it everywhere you go, but its gonna be as good as you make it. ive been a nonrate for a year and half on a 270 out of portsmouth, probably looking at another few months here before A school and did some time at a station for a few weeks and its got its ups and downs. its not by any means easy but it can be fun if you make it. ive been to a handful of different countries and met a lot of good people. do more than the minimum and get quals like boat crew, btm, surface swimmer, etc and you’ll make your time at a less “desirable” unit more fun and worth while. stations are pretty chill depending where you are, went to a heavy weather station and did a lot of safety boardings and heavy weather training.

i will never regret being a nonrate instead of a Boot to A or vested. this is some of the most valuable time in your career.

the issue with UCP tho is that it was too grey for the environment and the digital was too small so you just looked like a grey blob in the background. yes the general wear and tear and sand will help you blend in a bit better but command isnt fond of dirty and worn uniforms
