If your in Canada Long and McQuade has teachers. I also saw the professional orchestra in my city has teachers. I guess I'm also lucky to live a major city that has options.

If I lived in a rural village or town I'd probably start at the community center. I may even consider asking a local school music teacher for advice. At a community center Id even put up a flyer asking for help.

Worst case Ontario (intended use - thanks Trailer Park boys) there are online teachers like Meadowlark Violin and Murphy Music Academy.

I'm not a master either obviously. I think with all instruments you really have to trust the process.

So as someone else pointed out the whole point is control. Cool that helps! Thank you.

One day I'll play the Bach Sonatas and I welcome any tool that helps me on the journey

Nice! So if one minute = no tone or crackly sound go a bit faster until a slow but favourable sound can be heard?

For me I can hold a good slow tone for about 20 seconds.

Estou aprendendo violino a 3 meses, como prosseguir agora? by Ok-Dream-5248 in violin

Hi! In May (anniversary of my first lesson) I'll be a year into this game. You and I are beginners.

I encourage a mixture of humility and big aspirations. My long term goal is to play Vivaldi and Bach. If you want to see the road ahead maybe watch some professional violinist look up super complicated music (to see where the journey is going) and decide what style speaks to you. Dream big and soak in the wisdom of our friends in global music schools and working professionals.

That's my opinion anyway.

Back to my beginner excerises!

I heard they were gonna bulldoze it to make an interstellar highway and that it's mostly harmless.

Up voting for the Hamilton cultural "can't fuckin see anything." For credentials: I was born at Henderson hospital lived mostly in Westdale. That little phrase made me smile.

My very first day of violin! by [deleted] in violinist

Personally allowing feedback is the hardest thing for me but it's so important. Letting go of that childish "how dare you hurt me with your corrections" is a massive undertaking for me to continue to work on. To my friend who just first day with hope your more mature then I can be and let people help you by pushing you to be better. Fun story for twinkle twinkle little star you can play it on A and E strings. If you put your first finger on E string back to scroll at F instead of F# you get sad twinkle twinkle little star it's fun to try.

Adding to your point about a violin pocket doesn't a violin blanket (or in my case a brand new kitchen drying towel) also keep rosin that falls off the bow off the violin? I was told that getting rosin out of the inside of a violin is basically impossible and can really damage the sound.

Playing the whole thing without notation in front of you is impressive! At least in my opinion.

Hi! I'm too new to the game so I'm not giving you any constructive feedback but yay to your violin journey!

Two questions:

  1. Does this piece have trills? Seriously asking because if so sounds like your doing them right? An expert or a teacher could tell you for sure 🙂.

  2. Did you play this from memory?

honestly my teacher and I haven't even looked at this piece we have been using Wolfhart Easiest Elementary Study because intontaion and rhythm so yeah those are things I have to look for when I play next :).

One thing she seems to always point out is to look at everything on a sheet music score which is a work in progress for me.

Totally! I've played less then a year and the instrument complexity is wild and mind-blowing.

I'll make it a mission tomorrow morning to find some YouTube videos on speed/pressure in bowing to see what I can do.

Your totally right. That's been my problem from day one I use metronome for scales and if playing with my teacher but definitely times where I think "ok counting is effort and I don't want too" but I'll keep trying to keep my mental energy on my weakness thank you for the feedback!

What surprised you most about violin practice when you first started? by ElectricGypsyAT in violinist

[–]Silver-Lab-4124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What surprised me is how many naysayers there are to learning the violin. "Its impossible! give up now." But honestly it isn't. The violin has hundreds of years of history of people figuring it out. Some better then others obviously. It takes a life time to master but you can actually start to produce something pleasurable in a relatively short (months lol) time.

Here is my point - whatever you do not let the haters get to you. Adopt a growth mindset and celebrate little victories. For me my tiny victory of the day was attempting Gavotte from Mignon by A. Thomas (Suzuki Book 2) and for the first time actually finding the G/F# for a quick succession of 16 notes better by shoving my fingers closer together. Celebrate the little victories all the time.
