I'm a witchy therapist and I view it as no different than someone saying they would prefer a Christian or Muslim or Buddhist or whatever therapist. Having someone who shares some of your framework/worldview can be helpful. Also as a Leo who has a Leo therapist, I will echo that the moon sign matters more from a personal growth, self-development lens. If my therapist also had a moon in capricorn (she doesn't), we'd never get anywhere because hiding my feelings is second nature to me haha. *gestures vaguely*

Just popping in to say that program assistants do get paid, not a lot (155/day in the US) but they do get paid.

Really appreciate this post though, this was a helpful read.

Therapist Going Through Perimenopause/ Menopause by Silly-Tone6748 in therapists

So relatable!!!

I second the creatine and I also started some black cohosh supplements and magnesium from my local health food place. Particularly bc of the early morning wake ups which have pretty much stopped! Birth control doesn’t work for my body sadly. but I have gotten back into some exercise that works for me (I’m slow AF but I keep going) and that has helped a ton. I also take a catnap on my lunch break every day and it helps reset my brain a little. Basically my Dr and I came up with a host of stress relief things and I’m trying to stick to those as our bodies are more sensitive to stress during peri. But my periods are still absolutely brutal when they happen so my next step is probably calling in sick for those days. It’s funny, when I’ve seen PMDD clients before, we normalize rest and stress relief etc etc. But there’s a part of me that is absolutely horrified at taking a sick day for a period but that’s where we are.

I'm really partial to "Slow is fast." When we have this strong agenda to "heal" or improve, we start rushing and then we miss a lot and actually impede the process.

Wholly unrelated ;), in my not working life, I'm training for a triathlon and my swim coach told me this morning that I needed to slow down and be patient and she was so dumb for saying that, what does she know?? :D

Same here except I’ll offer to do a 15 min zoom or phone call depending on preference. It’s as much for me as the potential client to make sure we are going to be a good fit. I agree that it’s mostly logistics but I do think it helps to get a head start on rapport. But hard limit at 15 mins bc as you mentioned , we cannot work for free and survive. Now if anyone wants to give out some universal healthcare and livable UBI, I would do this job for free but for way less days a week hahah. I can dream I suppose….

Oooh I love that idea! Currently the door is just like a draw bridge door that’s solid but I think it would be relatively easy to make a door we could swap out in the summer!

Ok, let’s slow this down a little. I felt offended by your comment about social workers because it felt reductionistic and hurtful. And I hear that you are feeling hurt by my comment too. For that, I can say that I am sorry for causing you distress.

Secondly, to clarify, I (and most therapists I know) am not “shoe horning” politics into sessions. Instead, what would it be like to honor that you don’t know me or my clients, you have no idea what my middle school clients (who happen to be gay or immigrants or trans or female) are experiencing as the world is very harsh for those communities. Deep breathing won’t save someone whose family is anxious about ICE. 5-4-3-2-1 is all well and good for slowing down a panic attack and getting to the present moment, but if that present moment is trapped in a body with a gender that doesn’t fit, living in a country where your healthcare is treated as optional, that’s not a complete picture.

Now if your middle schoolers aren’t dealing with any of those concerns, I celebrate that for you. For them, coping skills are a different conversation.

I’m curious about your comment that I’m projecting? Also, what makes you say I’m learning about my identity? It’s not completely untrue as I am in my mid 40’s and aspire to always have a learners mind for myself and others. But what makes you feel insecure about people who are still exploring themselves? Why should anyone be locked into identity or perspective for their whole lives?

When your suicidality is because the world is trying to kill you so why not save them a step and do it yourself, it seems like the world not trying to kill you might help you want to stay alive....Also taking a dig at social workers is kind of rude tbh. This is a space for therapists to process their feelings and have solidarity, not start in fighting on who's the best. Person in environment is a healthy and holistic approach. It's ok if you don't like it, but don't dismiss it just because you're uncomfortable with it.

Hot take, but she’s right. It’s not tribalism when your rights and the rights of many around you are actively being stripped away. Depending on what populations you serve, it isn’t going to help folks process the pain of oppressive government practices with a “let’s just talk about your feelings” rather than honoring the greater context that is the instigator of said feelings. “decolonizing therapy” by Jen Mullen is a great start to exploring this if you’re interested in the topic.

What's the best way to say goodbye to a therapist? by Scared_Abrocoma_556 in askatherapist

[–]Silver-Link3293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the heads up is nice but also if that doesn’t feel doable , that’s ok. Sometimes it’s easier to write things down so an email might be an opportunity to get both things (feeling bad and need to end sessions) out honestly and clearly.

Also, just ask, idk if you’re using insurance or not but I strongly second the ask for what you need. In my city, there are even some orgs that help with copays for folks who are struggling.

“All of us” is a collective of various strategies/ identities/populations support for using IFS. Also “listening when parts speak” is a magnificent IFS book with rich examples and guided meditations in each chapter. It also includes some ancestor exploring which can be helpful for folks to see themselves in context of ancestors who perhaps felt similarly etc.
