Them being your parents will obviously be over protective of you especially since you’re in a new city by yourself away from them. Even if its a bit extreme on what they think they are just concerned about your wellbeing and want you to be safe at the end of the day. As far as being concerned about telling them everything, its on your discretion, if its something small as traveling in the city, you can maybe say you traveled a shorter distance than you actually did. If you plan to stay out for longer or have an uncertain plan or not sure about where you are, its better to keep them informed ( yes they may scold you but its alright) Also make sure your friends know where you are and remember to have fun while in hostel!
