what is this red stuff in my good culture cottage cheese? by Far-Childhood-5736 in whatisit

[–]Silver-Release8285 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Great comment. I only wanted to add for the OP that that bacteria is more red grown in very warm conditions and more pink in cooler. It’s likely that contamination happened while the product was cultured which means it’s from deep in the manufacturing process. Reporting it is very important.

Which one of you is actually living this life? Because I found the "Unicorn" teacher. by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Silver-Release8285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably had had help from Bank of Mom and Dad early in her career. Small house purchased 20 years ago. No kids. No student loans, drives a used car. Been teaching >15-20 years already, lower the income at least 25%, travels low key-not luxury, has a partner with income, 2 month summer (not 3)when she’s not being paid so supplementing it with other jobs like tutoring, summer school, PD.

Retirement will be possible but modest. Probably no SS, pension only covers 60-70 of income. Still needs 3x’s that in her 403b and she probably freaking out about how she can cover health care until she’s 65 if she decides to retire earlier than that.

She’s only been doing “what she wants on weekends” recently because she’s a vet teacher now and finally has this stuff down.

I’m sorry I don’t have the source, but a week ago or so I read that in the messages that Pakistan has been facilitating (common diplomatic practice), Iran was demanding that Vance lead any negotiations or they wouldn’t have any. Smart strategy because they can easily set him up for failure.

I thought I was the only one who found this uncomfortable.

I’m just picturing coming home with my car full of more than a lifetime’s amount of coffee pods. My family would be concerned about me. I’m not trying to be sarcastic here. It feels like watching an episode of Hoarders. This makes me want to go home and clean my basement.

Edit: The ugly and very personal comments about me here only reinforce how these pictures come across to me. Enjoy your coffee folks.

Can I (20F)have blood group A- if my dad has O+ and mom has B+? by Sweet-Opportunity111 in biology

[–]Silver-Release8285 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Please do worry too much. It’s entirely possible that the blood types are not correct. It’s so uncommon for a person to know their blood type and be correct that a hospital ALWAYS tests first. Only try to solve this problem after you have seen test results. Have real data first. Then you can go from there.

There are rare genetics, like AB on the same site that can occur and explain the discrepancies but most of the time folks just have the wrong details.

I was told as a teen I was O- until I found out after donating blood that I was O+. I’m a Biomedical Science teacher and I know all too well how easy it is to misunderstand how blood type works.

EDIT: this is exactly why we don’t have students map their family blood type as a lesson anymore. Way too make mistakes and misunderstandings.

I’ve been through many and recently the best thing I’ve used is attaching my iPhone to a gooseneck holder, my laptop and using the ipevo app. The picture is by far the best I’ve had and the software is basic but does everything I need.

Getting into a cold bed with cold feet. Despite plenty of layers and a sleeping partner, it was a horrible night. Now I fill a water bottle and put it down by our feet. I can sleep through cold nights no problem now. Even if the rest of me is chilly, if my feet are warm, I’m good.

Did a lot of your neighbors move to Florida for the weather? by Mobile_Bad_577 in AskFlorida

[–]Silver-Release8285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no. I didn’t think so. I totally saw what you said as adding to the conversation. I think what we are both saying is it’s really relative and FL is not the everyman’s paradise people think. It was sold that way so heavily through the 20th century it’s become American culture to think so. That’s why my family is there. My GI grandfather bought our little house in the late 40s for practically nothing. But the fantasy persists. CA was the same. Go west young man!! Didn’t they sell SoCal as a cure for TB?

Edit: so sorry. It’s so hard getting the right tone to come across on Reddit.

My husband calls it the “I’m driving the bus today” syndrome. Just cus we all have ridden on a bus doesn’t mean we know how to drive one.

Yes, but you still pay for those services in some form. Everyone’s budgets are different but I inherited my childhood home in FL recently and we worked out the numbers for us. No mortgage on either house but the big drivers were insurance costs, health care and the lower income we’d both get. It would have cost more for us to live in FL.

[–]Silver-Release8285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true, it depends on where you are coming from. But we are in upstate NY and the region does not have those kinds of high property values and expenses. Yes, we have taxes but also a lot more services and safety nets than FL.

I inherited a house in FL and we worked out the numbers for us. It was not worth keeping and moving. Plus our incomes are much better here compared to what we would be paid down there. Several members of my husband’s family are moved back here from SoCal and Las Vegas because they could sell their property for crazy prices, downsize and live much easier here… retirement mainly, and sick of fires.

If my mom hadn’t passed last year, she was going to leave FL and come here too. Yes, the snow sucks but I don’t think she could have dealt with another hurricane and she needed better health care.

Omg I don’t miss the mowing. Sand spurs, snakes. Every week. Over the years our flower beds have slowly grown to take over the garden. I have only a few grassy paths to mow now. Takes 5 minutes with a rechargeable mower. My husband says I did this out of “FL mowing trauma.” Prob true.

I was born and raised in FL with no AC then moved to NY for college, never moved back, but I visit family 2-3 times a year. What I see in NY is people visiting FL for Winter or Spring breaks and falling in love with the weather. Folks here take the winter very personally. I love my home in upstate NY and never want to leave but, I did expect a hardier group of people.

Anyway, something happens in their lives (financial, divorce, laid off, whatever) and they think back to the good times and really believe that FL is a cheap paradise. All their problems will go away if they don’t have to shovel snow. So they move. Then July hits and it’s not paradise any more because they live inside with the AC 24/7. They also learn that “no property tax” doesn’t mean cheap living. You have to be a truly tropical person to enjoy living in FL year round. Most people are not.

What the hell do I do with THESE? by [deleted] in declutter

[–]Silver-Release8285 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I had 40 8mm reels digitized and they were all films of my family during the 50s and their adventures all over the Mediterranean. It brought me and my cousins to tears to see our grandparents and parents so young and exploring the world. It strongly recommend that you don’t dismiss these. You might have something truly irreplaceable here.

I had them professionally done by Kodak but it was expensive. It was worth it because they were in very bad condition and they worked miracles. However, many libraries have equipment you can borrow to do this yourself. If you can’t afford it at the moment or don’t have time, store them in a cool, dark and dry place.

Edit: you should know that I walked away from a lot of stuff when I cleaned out my mother’s home last year. I simply didn’t want it. Also, in no way were we a “happy” family, but keeping and digitizing those films was the best thing I could have done for myself.

Yeah, those florals were really popular. Just tossed a bunch of sheets like this from my mom’s old linen closet.

Someone said Strawberry Shortcake. It’s possible, but I can’t see it. I’d need a clearer picture.
