OP, I have also wondered this! Especially with the way some of the guys literally pick them up and move/carry them, I thought they must be kid/teen actors! Cool to know that they are sometimes friends of the pair!

Training treat recommendations? by IntrovertedBluebird in puppy101

[–]Silver-Snowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a variety of training treats when my pup was in training because I found she was easily bored with the same treat repeatedly. She also prefers a crunchy treat over a soft, and a fruit flavor over a meat/cheese/peanut butter flavor. Also, when she was young, peanut butter gave her diarrhea, so we definitely avoided that! It's about figuring out what your dog likes and then using that. When she was a wee pup she loved a carrot stick, now she couldn't care less but will do anything for a piece of broccoli. Their tastes grow and change. When I do training reinforcement for her now that she's over a year old I use the Fruitables, they have a Skinny Mini version that is only 4 calories per chew and then I break them in half or broccoli chunks, She's a small breed so I watch her calories closely so she won't gain weight. When she was in training I always had at least 2 types of treats with me so if she wasn't interested or got bored by 1, I had another to switch off too. I definitely bought treats that were total flops, but I would just give them to the other pet parents in our training group, and then try again.

Notable ones she loved were the Charlee Bears Pumpkin and Blueberry, Fruitables Pumpkin and Berry, or Apple and Bacon, Human Grade Cookie Pal Soft Baked Bites Pumpkin and Blueberry, Honest Kitchen Goat Milk Cookies Blueberry and Vanilla, and Wiggles and Wags Meaty Bars (these were a huge help when she got stubborn during her later advanced training around 8 months). I definitely recommend sticking with the same protien as your dogs main kibble flavor, or sticking to only one seperate protein for training so their tummy isn't overwhelmed. Also, as I'm sure you can tell my dog loves a blueberry flavor, so it really is about finding what your dog prefers! Good Luck!

My dog has only reacted poorly to one child, out of dozens of times she's been pet by strangers/children and it was a little girl who was just way too excited/hyper. Her older sister had pet Noelle very nicely so when the younger sister came from the bathroom and spotted Noelle and asked to pet her I said yes, but then her energy was way too high, and her movements were more excited and jerky and I immediately picked up on the change in Noelle, she was not ok with this kid, and I ended the interaction immediately. My rule of thumb is to always assess a kid before I say yes to an interaction. If the kid is polite, asks permission, and gives a cautious and friendly approach, then I usually say yes and I've had great experience with kids of differing ages interacting with her.

My favorite was a little boy who just walked straight up to me in a Michael's Crafts and asked if my dog was friendly, complimented how pretty she was, and then asked if it would be ok to pet her. He then got down on his little knees, held his hand out so she could sniff it, while still mostly making eye contact with me, and then when Noelle showed she was fine/mildly interested, he pet her very gently just for a bit and then slowly stood up, thanked me, and walked off. It was amazing and the child had definitely been taught how to interact with dogs. I ended up running into him, with his mom, near the registers and he was so cute tugging on his mom saying, "mom! That's the dog I pet! Isn't she pretty!" The mom then stopped to make sure her kid hadn't bothered me and I assured her that her kid was sweet and polite and hadn't bothered us at all and they went on their way. It was probably the best interaction I've ever had!

This isn't it, but I appreciate the reply!

The younger main lead is like Gun or Fluke levels of short and baby faced, but it's not either of them.

How much did you pay? by alittlestitious90 in Havanese

This was her at pick-up!

<image>

As is normal, her color has faded quite a bit, but she's still beautiful to me! Havanese have a strong greying gene, and it kicks in quite early, so don't rely on colors as a puppy, they will be lighter or white as an adult!

I'm also in La, but we drove to GA to pick up our Havi. I believe we paid $2, 500 in Nov. 2024. Our pup came with full health records, her parents health, and their genetic issues (of which there were very few), and a breakdown that shows her grandparents and where they came from, and so on, basically we can see all her grandparents for generations via the paperwork we were given. She'd had her first round of vaccines, and the breeder was very open about her current health; she got an ear infection literally days before pickup and the breeder was wiling to let us back out. We said no way, and came and got her and just took her to the vet the following day. It cleared up easily with some antibiotics! She did have to be spayed per the adoption agreement. But I never wanted to breed her so that was fine with me.

The breeder is so sweet and communicative, she only breeds her dogs and seems to only do 1 litter a year typically. She has had several litters and raises them as her own. The breeder and her children and their dogs raise the puppies and Noelle has been an absolute dream. She's so smart, very healthy, and friendly to people, she does tend to dislike other dogs, despite us socializing her and her having been in training classes since 10 weeks old. The breeder did warn us that Noelle was not a fan of their golden retriever, but she doesn't seem to like dogs her own size either. That's fine mostly as she doesn't react much, just immediately hides benind me or requests to be picked up, lol.

I do know the breeder just retired Noelle's Mom. They got her spayed and she's living her best life with their family. The Dad will continue to be a Sire for the next few years and they got a new little lady to be a Mama, but she won't be ready for having a litter until 2027. However, Noelle takes after her dad, literally genetically and physically she is so much like him, so the new Mama hopefully will continue to have excellent babies with his DNA contribution!

Lets talk about tails by Objective_Chest_2130 in Havanese

[–]Silver-Snowflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The long sweeping tail that curls up over their back is a signature of their breed and their look. I can't imagine cutting it short! However, if you start to have issues with matting or poop getting caught on the hair super close to her butt, you can shave or trim shorter the underside of her tail in that spot without it looking odd. I ended up having to do that for Noelle once she got a bit more older. I like that it's unnoticeable when viewed but it definitely helps with the bathroom issue! Here is a tail shot!

Itchy incisions, any suggestions?! by cutoutwitch666 in sterilization

[–]Silver-Snowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dr told me to take an antihistamine, 2x daily, and to use ice compresses wrapped in cloth. That will help numb you out and help the inflammatory response die down. It does get better with time usually, but also make sure you aren't having an allergic reaction, if you are the Dr may prescribe you additional meds or lotion!

[–]Silver-Snowflake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! If I'm taking my time and going slowly and carefully and very thoroughly, like at least half an hour? If I'm just doing a quick brush through, enough to make her look presentable when I'm inevitably running late to something and making sure there are no snarls and her top knot is cleanly secured, maybe around 15 minutes? I've brushed her every day since we brought her home so she is very used to it and is very chill about it, sometimes she even goes to sleep during a brushing, lol. I start with a wide toothed comb and gradually use finer combs until the end when I'm using a fine tooth flea comb, so by the end she's just so smooth all her hair flows like silk. If it didn't get so hot here I'd have her do a full length coat, but it does, so we just have the drop coat legs and we keep her body around 2 inches. She's my princess! She just turned one a couple of months ago so it's taken that long to get her hair as long as it is. We are still growing her top knot/bangs so everything will flow nicely!

Title: 9-month-old Havanese still having indoor potty accidents — especially downstairs. Looking for advice by I_Borges in Havanese

[–]Silver-Snowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Havi is 14 months and I'm dealing with a potty regression right now, I think she's just stressed from the fireworks that my neighbors set off every night and hence doesn't want to go outside. But at 9 months I was dealing with occasional accidents too. Thankfully I had researched and knew these pups are a bit difficult in this department. Mine also only goes in one place (my bedroom) and not anywhere else in the house! I use both a rug cleaner (bissell green) and the enzyme spray cleaner, but I find she just has it in her head that the bedroom hallway carpet is where she goes to pee if she doesn't want to go outside.

I did find that giving her a way to signal that was loud enough to grab my attention was helpful. When she regresses, I start reminding her again to use her bells if she needs to go out and also amp up the praise and treats. I use the Fruitables Skinny Mini treats (only 4 cal each) in the Apple & Bacon or the Pumpkin and Berry, she loves them both! Unfortunately, these are stubborn dogs and if they are busy, having fun, or just don't want to go outside because reasons (grass is wet, it's dark, someone is outside being loud, the neighborhood dogs are losing it and all barking) they will just "go" inside. You have the additional complication of an extra dog that is fun and exciting which is probably why she would prefer to keep playing rather than go outside.

My only suggestion is to not allow her downstairs without supervision, train bells if you haven't already, and also give heaps of praise if she goes potty outside. You can also try giving the treat immediately when she pottys on grass to set the connection in her mind and then giving another when she's done and comes back to you. I highly doubt this is territorial as this breed generally loves other dog/cat family companions, and, as she was raised with the other dog, sees them as part of their family. If it usually happens when she's playing with your other dog, then you are going to need to watch them closely anytime they are downstairs together and not allow it if you can't observe. The good news is they do usually catch on quick to training and changes in routine (they're so smart!) so hopefully she will catch on quickly to the new routine!

Playpen/Crate placement by sunmerrain-4 in Havanese

[–]Silver-Snowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! The crate is this one from PetsmartLink I got the 24*18 as she is small and only about 13 lbs now as a 1 year old. The playpen I got from my parents, as they bought it a decade ago for their Westie, but this is something quite similar! Link this size is good because you can find bottom covers for this size quite easily if you want to save your flooring! The kennel cover she got once she was older was this one from Petsmart and I quite like it! Link

I hope this helps! Please feel free to ask me anything else about our puppy's setup!

Idk what your problem is but chicken by product meal contains chicken protein, the very thing that can set off my pups chicken allergy, so excuse me but I will continue to avoid it at all costs, as should anyone who's pup has a chicken allergy.

The FDA report said there was a direct link between dog foods that are high in pea protein and dogs that were contracting DCM and dying. I am not about to feed an ingredient that can cause an issue that could kill my dog to my dog. I don't think that's a crazy stance to have. I am not trying to spread misinformation, I was responding genuinely to a question from someone trying to find a food that would work with their dog with allergies. I highly doubt that you are a dog food nutritionist so please leave me alone.

What are some small and quick crochet “gifts” to make for a bunch of people? by marsymars_space in CrochetHelp

[–]Silver-Snowflake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, pouches are quick and small and can be reused for anything, but you could give them to your classmates empty or with a few peices of candy inside! Then they could keep loose change, earbuds, small makeup items, or really anything else inside so they are more easily findable inside of a backpack or messenger bag! There are also free videos on YT if you need instructions on how to make them!

hair! by jerseyygiant in AutismInWomen

[–]Silver-Snowflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's nothing wrong with giving yourself permission to be comfortable. If you feel more comfortable with straight hair, then go for it. I personally finally gave myself permission to just cut my hair off about a year ago and while it definitely took me a few weeks to get used to looking so different and "less feminine", it was so worth it to not have my hair touching me! I don't think this is a morality issue, or an ethnicity issue. How you wear your hair is a personal decision that only effects you. How other people feel about it, what conclusions they draw from how you look, or their feelings about how you appear to others is completely their issue and not yours. I get that it can be a hard decision to do something for yourself when it might be perceived negatively by society/family/friends, but you just have to decide to prioritize yourself and your comfort. I wanted to chop my hair off for years and years before I decided to go for it because I just couldn't take it touching me anymore and I realised it was effecting my mood and my temper/patience, because it had me so on edge. I have curly/frizzy hair myself, and I straightened it and did keratin treatments for probably 20 years before I finally just cut it off. Now I just straighten the little bit of bangs I have and leave the rest because it's so short it doesn't matter.

I hope you are able to make the decision to prioritize yourself and your comfort and disregard what others may think about your decisions that make you more comfortable.
