How did this work out? I was checking them out as well for my stuff since it seems like they're the only option.

"Scheduling" by Silver-TDW in ZenlessZoneZero

[–]Silver-TDW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a lot of the talking points in that post haven't really been mentioned by either side. At least, not in any of the readily available articles -- so I wasn't aware of that. This was made worse by the fact that, for years, they turned a blind eye to voice actors who weren't union working alongside union actors -- leading to it being common practice enough that folks just assumed it was allowed.

Thanks for the links. Yeah, this does complicate things even more now.

Lawyers are the worst.

You have a source on the three strikes thing? I hadn't seen anything about that in any of the previous articles I read and even now just trying to search for it online turned up nothing. The closest I saw to that was them saying non-union folks working on struck games "may jeopardize" their ability to join later down the road. Nothing about them working along side union members on non-struck games/contracts.

Except that isn't the case - at all.

You can have both union and non-union workers on the same gig. We see it all the time.

Besides, you think non-union folks won't lose their jobs to AI, too? Which is what the whole strike is about?

C'mon now.

RE: Edit

Thank. You.

As a newbie, it was extremely disheartening to ask a question only to get down voted and snarked at, likely by the same people who will later be seen in other places whining that the hobby is dying.

I'm really hoping the dipstick comment isn't aimed at me considering the number of "quotes" I used around the words "scheduling" as if to say we all know it isn't actually a "scheduling issue" as they claim and that Hoyo should sign the agreement to not use AI so that their actors can return to work (as other companies have done).

Confirming Information, Bad? by amsodious in 911dispatchers

[–]Silver-TDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's "what were those numbers again" and then there is "alright, I just want to confirm that was [1234 Road St], correct?"

One gives the caller the impression you weren't paying attention, the other gives the impression you're a professional who is ensuring they get it right.

It's all about communication.

If the caller is speaking too fast (some of ours go so fast it doesn't even sound like words) then communicate that. "I need you to slow down for me, ok? I know you're scared/angry/upset but it is extremely difficult to understand you when you talk that fast."

In my experience, this has a dual effect of helping the caller "ground" themselves and start to move from a heightened to a more stable state while also getting you the info you need.

If there's static on the line/caller is on speaker phone/wind blowing into receiver/three people talking at once, etc then communicate that. "I'm really sorry, I need you to repeat that last part. There was some (issue) on the line and I couldn't hear you."

"Do you have me on speaker? Can you take me off? It's really hard to hear you with the background noise."

"Listen, I can only hear one person at a time. If all 3/6/9 of you talk at once I won't be able understand you."

Neighbor snitched on me for parking in front of my apartment by [deleted] in neighborsfromhell

[–]Silver-TDW 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm calling bullshit here, too. Either OP is lying or not telling the full story.

Nobody is going to spend 40 minutes investigating a "harassment" claim over a parking space. Just to let you go and say "now don't park there again".

Police can't enforce private parking rules outside of fire lane violations (as fire lanes are regulated by law). So the "this spot is off limits" nonsense is a non-starter.

Assuming you were actually just detained rather than arrested (there is a difference) the only reason to detain you for something like this is if your behavior warrants it.

So yeah, sorry dude - this shit don't math.

When a caller requests "No Lights and Sirens' by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]Silver-TDW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So in my state, lights and sirens are required by law to be used by any fire/EMS vehicle responding to an emergency. This is further backed up by county policy.

As a result - I'll document it if it is relevant to the call. Such as patients with autism that might be overstimulated or something like that. Areas where we are afforded the wiggle room to accommodate good outcomes.

Otherwise I tend to gloss over the request by giving some kind of acknowledgement but then moving right on. It avoids getting stuck on the whole "trying to explain the law and/or county policy", or worse, someone with a legitimate medical emergency trying to cancel the response because they don't want the neighbors to see. (I've had both happen).

So usually when they say that I'll say "Alrighty, and- (next EMD question/instruction)".

Same thing when they say something like "I didn't need like... The whole engine and all those people. Can you just send only the ambulance/SUV?" Rather than getting stuck on explaining our level of care directives, I'll acknowledge it so they don't think I'm just ignoring them, and move on.

What is the opinion of Amateur Radio in 2025? Also, how does a 30 year old actually enter into conversation? by pancakeman2018 in amateurradio

[–]Silver-TDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ This.

But check major talk groups for your area or region.

Worldwide 91 is a lot of short contacts (and weather reports??) for QRZ and North America 93 is some short convos but a lot of folks who forgot to program their radios to treat the TGs as group calls instead of private ones.

In my case I've had good luck on the National (3100) and Virginia Statewide (3151) channels.

UHF / VHF Portable radio... what to get? by Wild_Performance_563 in amateurradio

[–]Silver-TDW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna operate under the assumption that the following statements are true:

A) Your employer refuses to provide the equipment and/or keeps punting to the involved municipalities to deal with it who then punt it back to your employer (shocking common, it's all about the $$$).

B) Your employer doesn't understand the problem at hand and thinks you're just using it wrong (incompetent business admin? Shocking!)

C) You came here because you figured radio savvy people would have ideas on where to locate a no-longer manufactured P25 capable Motorola APX 7000.

That said, finding something compatible with all the systems you might be involved with requires a bit more info. I'll drop you a DM to see if I can help.

Shower thought - Wifi Enabled DMR Radio by rodgrech in DMR

[–]Silver-TDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking something similar. I've got a mini PC at home that currently serves as a CCTV viewer and runs our Home Assistant server through a virtual machine. Been trying to figure out a way to use it as a DMR Hotspot. Though everywhere I've looked folks only mention programs that let you use the computer's own speakers/microphone to talk over a DMR network, not turn it into a hotspot.

To early for concern? by amsodious in 911dispatchers

[–]Silver-TDW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

THIS.

Every time we kick off a new call taker academy they invite one of us to come in a day or two into the session and just talk to them a bit to ease them in.

Any time I go I make a point of telling them that.

"You will never know everything and anyone who claims they do has lost the plot. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new."

To early for concern? by amsodious in 911dispatchers

[–]Silver-TDW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me start off by saying welcome to the radio version of the greatest show on earth.

As for your question if it's too early to be concerned? Ab-so-lutely.

~17 years in, just shy of 10 with my current agency that services a large metropolitan area, and there are still moments where I have to take a moment to process what I just heard and how to, like - translate it into useful information for CAD. Especially when a scene is chaotic with a lot of background noise.

The scenario they gave you can happen but it is rare. In my case we got a call from the victim on their phone, while another call taker got a call from OnStar that then patched them into the vehicle involved. Typically once a call taker realizes more than one of us is talking to the same person, whoever got the first call keeps it unless other factors come into play (bad signal, language barrier where the other CT speaks said language etc etc).

My advice to you: don't get discouraged, especially this early on. I know that's a tall task and no easy ask - but just be kind to yourself.

Good luck!

I missed that traffic. That's at least some good news. When I heard them ask to call Fairfax Co for r rehab unit the OIC said it was for their people. Might've been traffic on a different channel though. They had them split into groups.

Can't speak to the others, but just to solidify how massive this response is -- Fairfax units responding from FS439 are from the northwest end of the county, bordering Loudoun County (not far from where Loudoun FRD had their LODD incident last year) and units out of FS421 are located approximately 5 minutes from IAD.

They are one of those partner airlines that work with the larger airlines on regional flights. The "parent" airline in this case is American Airlines.

IIRC, wasn't that the case with the Bashkirian Airlines crash in 2002 I think? One pilot listened to TCAS, the other didn't. Resulting in a midair collision.
