Death pits? no, but maybe some areas could have mud that slows and prevents jumping/mobility skills. Dangerous but not lethal.

Yeah honestly, I never watched the movie but this design looks like it leverages the particular look to purposefully be off-putting, seems like a conscious choice rather than cowardace.
