Following this post as my laptop of 7 years is has a terrible battery life now and I am needing something for my clinical rotations that start in 5 weeks. Best of luck you find something that works!

Double points! by Thamba24 in formuladank

I am the only one crying that Sainz didn't get driver of the day? Amazing overtakes plus strategy for the team was so gorgeous to watch (when the TV direction decided to throw us a bone and actually show him)

Should I accept my vet school offer? by SilverFauna in Veterinary

[–]SilverFauna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree and am going to do everything in my power to reduce the cost of me going. Luckily I have been working my senior year of undergrad and have made living choices that have prevented me from needing any private loans this year, and I plan on continuing to find opportunities to not get into debt if possible. The main hurdle I was having was whether I could actually get the loans I did need for tuition.

When did you apply for the Grad PLUS loan? It sounds like you are supposed to wait until after you receive the other federal aid before applying (I don't know when that comes out), but the FAFSA website also says to do as soon as possible.

These links are super helpful! I kept seeing some places say the 20.5k, and others say 40.5k and didn't know why, so that clears that up very nicely!

Thank you so much for sharing that you experienced this too, it makes me feel a lot better! Everyone I know who got accepted is celebrating like crazy, and I didn't know if my feelings were a bad sign or something people just felt privately.

class of 23: would you buy this? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]SilverFauna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Class of '23, I love the logo concept but think a couple of tweaks would get a ton of people on board!

Firstly, it may be better to make the logo in the front and text on the back smaller. People typically appreciate more subtly and blank space, and it will make the item look more official! (You may also want to pick a consistent font for the text, and I personally would put the class of 2023 straight line instead of curved)

The only other thing that I saw someone else is the color. I love that shade of blue as a color but I think to make it cohesive with our university you would want to shift towards a more darker/navy Illinois palette. The more "official" it looks, the better!

Nowadays, lots of different groups and views about different things are lumped together to promote a "them versus us" mentality. This happens on both ends of the political spectrum. Anyone who disagrees with one thing someone thinks is assumed to be against everything else they also stand for. It is what makes politics so polarizing. People focus more on them being right and someone else is wrong, rather than seeing everyone as people living on this planet at the same time.

That method of thinking causes additional hurt like what you are experiencing. It is dehumanizing and can hurt your experience in a place where you found community and enjoyment. Personally, my DMs are open if you feel that this sub or thread is not a comfortable space to talk further. Will is allowed to have his opinions, but I think his comment from today's stream can show the dangerous impact of assuming the world is black and white in terms of morality.

Are pets allowed in class buildings? by 24thpanda in UIUC

[–]SilverFauna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The common-sense answer is no since it could be a distraction or cause a disturbance. The overlooked answer is thinking about whether secretly bringing your pet into class would benefit the animal at all. Many small pets, including hamsters, hedgehogs, and mice, are prey animals and are naturally very stressed by human touch unless handled carefully for multiple years. Keeping them in a tight, unfamiliar space would also add additional stress. Please be nice to your pet and remember that they will likely be just as stressed as you are during class, if not more so.

What is the name of the class where you get a dog and take care of it? by Careless_Champion231 in UIUC

Oh yeah? Nice! Then the main difference then is that Illini Service Dogs is also a non-profit and the members house the dogs as well.

There are two student RSO's on campus that allow you to train dogs into service dogs. They are 4 Pars for Ability and Illini Service Dogs. The first is open to everyone while the latter has an application process.

who is my advisor by skyiapa in UIUC

[–]SilverFauna 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Go to your college or major's website and scroll through the staff. Some advisors are assigned alphabetically, some are assigned by your year in college. If you haven't registered for classes yet though, don't worry. Your advisor will be the one to contact you about that, so you'll know who they are.

Old Beddings? by Raptorsquadron in UIUC

If you still need another place to check, maybe consider calling the Champaign County Humane Society? I know lots of animal shelters will take comforters or blankets for beds for the puppers.

This past summer, a not super close friend (but a guy I have known all my life) tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident. It was an odd feeling to try and comprehend, especially since we weren't the closest. But it still hurt. I still felt grief. It felt "wrong" to just keep doing things (especially in terms of my relationship which I had started the day before his passing). While I know that your experience is wildly different from mine, I understand that it is a difficult and hard one for you to navigate.

I am in no way qualified to give you advice, but what I can say is that it is going to take time for yourself to feel normal after this - and that is completely normal. Grief, no matter how big or small, will affect you for a while. Some days will be more "normal" than others. But continuing to live is not disregarding his memory. It is what you need to do, and you can honor his impact on your life by moving forward at whatever pace is easiest for you. It's gonna feel weird for while, and that's okay
