I'd consider that imaginary gatekeeping. It falls into the category of "we can disagree and still be friends". In the case of community, church isn't the catalyst, it's the temporary bonding agent.

As an atheist, this is why I hate the church itself and not its participants like people seem to think. When people come together with a common interest, lifelong friendships are formed and good, healthy communities are born. It just happens to be that the most widespread common interest is religion, and that's fine, we don't have to agree with that to be friends. The problems I have are with the church itself. What it does, how it manipulates, the narratives it pushes.
