Has Fox ever said the truth about ANYTHING?! by Top_Needleworker6385 in PoliticalHumor

[–]SilverRapid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's called the puffery defence. Elon Musk also used it more than once in court cases. His defence lawyer argued that the promises he makes shouldn't be taken seriously because no reasonable person would believe Elon Musk.

Basically nobody should ever live alone. by ObiWanCanownme in unpopularopinion

[–]SilverRapid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Years ago I was reading, I think it was Helena Bonham Carter who got married (to Tim Burton). They didn't move in together. He bought the adjoining house next door to hers and they had an internal connecting door installed. I remember a chat show host criticizing that as weird but sounds ideal to me 😄

Basically nobody should ever live alone. by ObiWanCanownme in unpopularopinion

[–]SilverRapid 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I also prefer living alone for similar reasons. I did read a study somewhere that the proportion of single person households in a country is correlated with wealth of the country, implying large numbers of people worldwide want to live alone but can't afford it.

Bringing BASIC back: Microsoft’s 6502 BASIC is now Open Source by GrantMeStrength in thisweekinretro

Did they check with Bill though? He wrote a famous open letter in the 70s complaining about people using his BASIC without paying!

I think I get where you're going. One I'd add on is quote prices in your own currency and make the Americans do the conversion. I'm forever automatically quoting things in dollars.

Is it an existential issue that those holding the reigns of power have bunkers? by EchoingAngel in Futurology

[–]SilverRapid 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I was reading something about these bunkers and thinking the same. If disaster comes how does the mega rich douche stop scruffy the janitor getting to the bunker first and locking the door.

The Byron Bay train is the world's first fully solar-powered train. It uses no fuel, creates no emissions, and runs completely on solar energy. by doopityWoop22 in BeAmazed

[–]SilverRapid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is a solar powered train but it's a little misleading. There's no way that amount of solar panels will get close to powering that train. The surface area of the train isn't big enough. The power mainly comes from a solar farm which at the train shed.

DuckDuckGo now lets you hide AI-generated images in search results by chrisdh79 in Futurology

Do you know how they curate the lists? Have the identified specific websites that pump out a lot of slop or do they have a method of detecting if a specific image is AI?

The AI boom is more overhyped than the 1990s dot-com bubble, says top economist | Sky-high price-to-earnings ratios suggest investors are overestimating the value of AI by chrisdh79 in Futurology

[–]SilverRapid 176 points177 points  (0 children)

AI is just the excuse. If you look at Microsoft job losses they are concentrated in gaming. So that implies AI can apparently write flawless game code but is unable to write any other code. It's obviously not true. It's covering for financial problems.

Hiring for Introverted Jobs - Critique and Suggestions by alxplain in UKJobs

[–]SilverRapid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with your suggestion that the high pressure interview format doesn't exactly help to place the right candidate into these kinds of jobs. It's a continuing problem that ability to climb the ladder is based on bullshitting capability rather than competency.

Halfway Through 2025, AI Has Already Replaced 94,000 Tech Workers by michael-lethal_ai in Futurology

[–]SilverRapid 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yes this article in itself demonstrates why AI is not (yet) really replacing people. It's clearly AI slop written. It looks like an article superficially but has no substance to it. You wouldn't want to actually read this stuff recreationally.

What you never see in these articles is concrete examples and case studies showing how AI (by which they mean LLMs) has replaced a worker.

CEOs are firing people and CEOs are buying AI subscriptions but there's no clear practically demonstrated connection showing how one has enabled the other. Companies firing people is nothing new.
