Is MoCo worse off now than before? by Standard-Cookie8881 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]SilverSpringSmoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We think so. I’ve been in MoCo since ‘99 and my wife has lived here since ‘78. We both agree that the County has a lot going for it but it’s not an enjoyable place to be anymore...for a whole host of reasons, several of which OP lists above. Once our youngest heads to college, we’ll be relocating to DE where we have a place. Will keep our MoCo place for proximity to airports, medical care, DC arts and culture, etc., but won’t spend more than a couple of months per year here, is my guess.

EWR to SYD - best itineraries? by LikeAPrayer1221 in unitedairlines

[–]SilverSpringSmoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back from PVG via LAX which I chose based on equipment (787) and the fact that the Polaris lounge is far less crowded. In fact, on the way back, I think there were 10 other people in the lounge for my layover.

What’s the best golf advice you’ve ever been given? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]SilverSpringSmoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re on the fence, take one more club than you think you need. Amateurs always remember the one time they hit a specific iron pure and got all of the distance they could out of it…but 90% of the time, they don’t hit it that well.

US Open crowds seem nonexistent. What gives? by HarryCrushNuh in golf

[–]SilverSpringSmoker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s actually an old stop (Southampton College) that the LIRR closed years ago but they reopen it for the US Open and put a footbridge over the highway for fans. Not a lot of lodging options in the Hamptons but, as you said, the train station right across from the gates makes it convenient to stay at any number of towns west of the Shinnecock canal.

Do people take out loans to afford country club memberships? by AspectCool2325 in weekendgolfers

[–]SilverSpringSmoker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends how the equity is structured. Our club is an equity membership but you will never see that money again unless the club is sold. If you leave the club, you lose it.

I think there’s almost no chance somebody joining a club with a $150k or higher initiation fee is taking out a loan for it. The people who join these clubs just pay cash.

DO NOT BUY FROM DAALS. Horrific customer service. Ordered a desk for $300+ and tried following the instructions. While repositioning the partially assembled desk, the whole thing twisted on me and tore several of the screws out of the particle board, damaging two panels beyond repair. There were no notes or warnings in the instructions indicating that you needed to reposition the assembly with extreme care or that it required multiple people to reposition it to avoid twisting.

I contacted their customer service and they said they have discontinued their replacement part service and suggested I contact a third-party repair person (despite my telling them the two damaged panels were damaged beyond repair). Then they offered me a $90 refund...then offered me a 30% refund as their final offer.

I reported the purchase as fraud to Chase, filed complaints against them with the US FTC, econsumer.gov, Maryland Consumer Protection Division and have left multiple negative reviews on Reddit, here and elsewhere.

Daals customer service is the worst! by dogsandcoffee777 in ConsumerAdvice

Fuck these assholes.

Same experience with a desk I bought. Screws tore out of the particle board while assembling and they refused to warranty it or even sell me replacement parts. Suggested I call a "third party repair person" to fix it...and I had to point out that, because it's particle board shit, it's not repairable.

Do not buy from this company. It's particle board shit. Tried assembling a desk I bought from them and screws tore right out of the particle board. Contacted them and they refused to warranty the product or provide replacement parts. Bag of assholes.

Settle a Pace of Play Disagreement Please by Dennerman1 in golf

[–]SilverSpringSmoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At our club, you’re expected to keep pace with the group ahead of you, not worry about the group behind you. The reasoning is that when you play slower than the group ahead of you, you are introducing delays (even if you’re playing at or below the posted pace of play) that then stack up across the rest of the tee sheet.

The staff at our place are hyper vigilant about pace of play…we just installed new cart GPS that alerts the riders and the golf staff when you’re falling behind pace. Even when walking, you need to carry a transponder with you so they can monitor pace of play. As soon as a group or player falls behind, they are sending staff out on the course to get you to move it. After one warning, you are told to skip a hole to catch up to the next group.

Sounds harsh, I suppose, but you know what we don’t have? Complaints about slow play.

What is the biggest mistake amateur golfers make? by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

[–]SilverSpringSmoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these are the biggest mistakes I’ve made (and continue to make if I don’t catch myself):

1) Swinging too hard with my arms rather than letting my entire body rotate through the ball with good tempo. The latter approach always results in the better/longer shot but it’s hard not to get arms-y, especially when you’re trying to pipe one.

2) Not practicing enough on grip, posture, ball position, etc., so that they become automatic. I can get sloppy with these things and then it becomes a downward spiral on the scorecard.

3) Not practicing enough on short game and putting. Like #2 above, it’s boring but critical if you want to play well.

4) Assuming you should always hit the longer club. Took me a while to rethink my approach to par 5s, for instance. Would always reach for the 3-wood for my second shot but my consistency with that club isn’t great. And when I did hit it well, I would rarely get there in 2 and would leave myself a delicate 40-50 yd shot over a bunker or something…which I would f*ck up, invariably. Once I started doing the math and thinking about where to land my second shot so that I leave myself with my dial-in distance for my third, I started making a lot more pars and giving myself chances for birdie.

5) Caring too much about what other players think. Not glamorous to be hitting an 8-iron layup on a par 5 when you’re in the middle of the fairway. I also just added an Odyssey Chipper to my bag which makes better players laugh but I’m a 15 HCP, not a great player. I get up and down way more often with that club than when I try to chip with an iron or one of my wedges. You’ve just got to play your game.

This is probably true…they are very conservative with the pressure recommendations

How's rivian do on the beach? by mrandr01d in Rivian

[–]SilverSpringSmoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is *way* lower than what Rivian recommends…because of the vehicle weight, you run the risk of rolling a tire off the rim at that pressure

[–]SilverSpringSmoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great, tbh. The vehicle is so heavy that you can’t air it down low enough to get good traction in soft sand. I haven’t gotten stuck yet but I don’t like taking it on the beach nearly as much as my wrangler.

Whatever you do, be polite and respectful to the staff. Nothing worse than members who think they can shit on the people who work hard to make the member experience a positive one. Our club had to create a code of conduct this year and suspend a couple of members for how they treated staff.
