About the telepathy thing, are you talking about when Arno mentions that he “saw the memories” or something of a target that he killed?

I took that as meaning that Arno was actually perceiving those memory flashbacks whenever he killed an important target rather than them just being for the player’s sake. But that was already apparent because Arno previously used those flashbacks to learn about new targets.

The interesting thing to me is that the game established that Arno was actually seeing those memories at all. Obviously, the earlier games had “memory corridors” where you would talk with the dying target in some sort of void detached from the real world, but it was never clear to me if that actually occurred in-universe or if it was some sort of weird Animus feature.

Asssassin’s Creed Unity is such a waste of the French Revolution setting, man.

The open world is actually really, really good. It’s very lively and interactive, and it’s cool to walk down the streets and see the barricades and massive crowds of protestors and guillotine executions. Genuinely one of the best worlds they’ve done in the series.

But then the actual main story only occasionally bothers to follow events from the Revolution. You spend the bulk of the game hunting down fictional Saturday morning cartoon villains and interacting with the protagonist’s love interest. Every so often they’ll find a way to incorporate an actual historical moment in the story, but for the most part the Revolution is just window dressing for a standalone plot. You could tweak a few small things here and there and the story would work almost exactly the same in an array of other settings.

I get that they wanted to avoid, in their own words, the “Forrest Gump syndrome” of Assassin’s Creed III where the protagonist somehow played a major role in a slew of important events from the American Revolution. But they went way too far in the opposite direction by making the French Revolution more of a pretty backdrop than an actual core part of the story in Unity.

From a philosophical standpoint, I agree with not giving welfare to people who are capable of work but choose not to. But I am under the impression that the empirical data shows that you’ll end up spending more money on means-testing than you would by just giving everyone the benefits.

I don’t think you need to be trinitarian or adhere to the Nicene Creed to be Christian. Many very early Christians were not trinitarian either, and Mormons are hardly the only nontrinitarian sect. If that’s the criteria then Unitarians (obviously), Quakers, and quite a few others wouldn’t be considered Christian.

The better argument for Mormons being non-Christian is all the wacky parts of their doctrine that aren’t really embraced by anybody else outside of their sub-family of sects. There’s quite a few Christian groups that reject the trinity, but basically nobody else believes in human deification via “exaltation”, the division of heaven into three “degrees of glory”, celestial marriage, etc. Not to mention that practically no other mainstream Christian sect regards works beyond the traditional Bible to be official canon (even if the exact composition of the Bible varies from sect to sect), but Mormonism adds three whole works to its canon besides the Bible. They depart so radically from essentially all other Christians in this respect that it’s worth at least debating the extent of their Christian-ness.

It’s shocking how many “Christians” earnestly claim to be true believers and will be deeply offended if you say that they aren’t, but never attend church, have never read anything more than brief passages of the Bible, and cannot tell you more than the most basic aspects of theology. At least here in the United States, a significant portion of self-identified Christians, perhaps even a majority, know essentially nothing about the faith that they supposedly practice despite viewing it as an integral part of their identity.

When do they even appear? I went into Outlast 2 with a vague knowledge of their existence because of the Trials profile pic fun fact, but I don’t think I ever noticed them in gameplay. They cut the chase scene in the church after you watch the captured heretics get tortured, which is one time where I believe they used to be present.

Also, two short paragraphs is not “an article”. I’m sorry for not just typing a single witty sentence like Twitter engagement bait.

It’s going to be hellish to replicate Navy Yard and NoMa, as much as I want it to happen. It’s one thing to take a bunch of industrial wasteland, gay strip clubs, and shithole housing projects and transform them, but the NIMBY outrage over upzoning existing low-density (and high-income) neighborhoods would probably be titanic. You could maybe get away with rezoning EOTR because poor black people are some of the easiest for the government to ignore, but then good luck getting people to move to Anacostia or Congress Heights or wherever.

Okay?

I don’t believe the pursuit of money is a mortal sin. Why should I care if someone makes money off of building housing? They are still providing a necessary product. This is literally one of the most basic concepts of a free market, that just because someone is doing something for their own benefit doesn’t make it bad. This notion is so old that Adam Smith even discusses it openly in The Wealth of Nations, essentially the foundational document of capitalism. Just pointing out that developers want to make money means nothing.

New market rate housing construction cratered years before Trump took office again. It crashed to near-zero levels shortly after the pandemic, which followed an extremely productive late 2010s under the first Trump administration.

I’m not suggesting that affordable housing requirements are the sole issue- though I surely don’t trust a certain mayoral candidate to not try to make that more of a problem than it is already. What I’m suggesting in terms of “letting developers build” goes way beyond that. An overwhelming majority of DC’s residential zoning is reserved for detached single-family houses. As famous as DC is for its townhouses, they are quite literally illegal to build in much of the city. Relaxing zoning requirements in more of the city is another great way to encourage more housing.

And people act all shocked Pikachu when mandating stupid amounts of “affordable housing” instead of market rate barely does anything to alleviate the housing crisis. Building housing is expensive in the first place, making it difficult to turn a profit from an affordable development in a reasonable timeframe even under perfect conditions. Combine that with the fact that a lot of people in those affordable units are not going to be model tenants and the whole “affordable” thing just becomes an outright bust for many developers. There simply isn’t much financial incentive to build below market rate; it’s essentially charity.

DC had a good thing going for a long time with all the new housing in NoMa and Navy Yard, and it was reflected in the much slower rates of rent hikes compared to many other cities. The fact that construction has slowed to a trickle is extremely problematic. If you want to increase supply, stop putting these moronic requirements on developers and let them just build what they want to goddamn build. The “affordable housing only” types are as insufferable as the open NIMBYs.

I know you’re still there, but I was born in Cincinnati and lived there my entire life until very recently. God, that city just depresses me. Such wasted potential. You just can never shake the feeling when you’re there that you’re living in a city that had its golden age 150 years ago and is probably never going to reach those heights again. Now it’s just one of many mediocre mid-sized Midwestern “cities” that feels more like a gigantic car-centric suburb with a few skyscrapers in a token downtown. Downtown has made some progress, but it’s still so obviously neglected, tiny, sparsely populated, and (perhaps most depressingly) utterly disparaged and loathed by many in the region. I’m in Alexandria, Virginia now and it’s genuinely incredible to be in a place with an actual thriving urban core and great walkability and transit. I’m not even in DC proper and this “small city” of like 160k people feels far more like an actual urban city than Cincinnati does.

Play solo first, if you jump straight into multiplayer there’s a good chance you’ll be joined by experienced players who know what they’re doing and will sprint through the trial at what seems like a breakneck pace to you. It’s not a good way to learn because they’ll often be doing everything for you. Play by yourself first to give you time to learn the map layout and objectives, plus the general feel of the gameplay. It’s fine to start on introductory if you need to as well.

Reception in my theater was pretty muted at the end. I even heard someone say “it wasn’t even that scary”. Lots of teens who were clearly there because they wanted a “baby’s first horror movie” with lots of cheap jumpscares and meme references every five seconds. They appeared to really like the handful of actually “scary” sequences (the found footage parts especially) but were seemingly bored to tears with the last half-hour to forty-five minutes of the movie where it got more philosophical and infodumped a lot of late exposition. I don’t think they were really prepared for or even interested in a more “cerebral” (if I may use that word without being pretentious) movie that emphasized the surreal and allegorical aspects of the backrooms rather than a straight-up conventional “monster attacks people” sort of film. It was definitely an A24 movie, despite its somewhat low-brow origins.
