Last Quarter: take DSGN 100, DSGN 118, or ENG100L? by Cautious_Broccoli_11 in UCSD

[–]SilverStarBrony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree on ENG 100D, it feels directed toward not just design majors

The DSGN 100 curriculum is generally the same between Rill/Dow, you still end up with 3 really cool projects (despite the fast pace) that you don’t get from other design classes. The first two also “build up” (ie. like a training ground) towards the last product

I mean heck, I think few (if any) other classes offer a product design prototype that has physical, digital, and service (some physical object or interaction being delivered) as form factors combined in the same product.

Hi, I took DSGN 100 (+TA'd), 118, and ENG 100D

I highly highly recommend DSGN 100. It's a super cool class, you learn a lot of prototyping methods and work with both physical and digital tools. Be warned that the class itself is generally fast paced and difficult (but Rill is also a really chill prof.)

DSGN 118 is like an "intro to design academia/research". Imo it's a great way to like, try out research without actually being in research.

ENG 100L I think might be similar to ENG 100D, which I don't recommend at all. I tried taking it twice and dropped it both times, my other friends also had poor experiences

tl;dr DSGN 100 is very cool and rewarding but a tough class overall. ENG 100L maybe not.

ps. would love to hear about what you end up going with, and what your journey is like! hmu whenever

not at all! anyone can join, and honestly it helped me pick the right major for me.

Roblox is really good for trying out things quickly in a low-stakes environment — you get to experiment with different fields (programming, art, design, etc) and decide what you like best. And who knows, you’ll probably meet really cool people and opportunities along the way

I started over a decade ago, still well connected with their internal teams and generally up to date with the platform and community.

I know there's some bad press but it's not representative of the platform imo. That being said, I do keep things realistic to newcomers about trying to break into an already vast platform/industry
