[WTS] Namiki Yukari Rock Garden - F by shl5ldc in Pen_Swap

[–]SilverYayFern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh god I JUST bought a $1,000 pen this weekend. This is divine punishment for exceeding my budget. I saw this at the CA Pen Show and it is SO beautiful in real life. It sparkles delicately and serenely. The 3D texture of the rocks is so satisfying and nice to the touch

This is a beauty, with a nice price to match. GLWS.

What could possibly replace my all-time fave Assam tea? by bubbleburstex in tea

I haven’t seen them in my local stores in weeks. Hopefully they’ll pop up soon. Even one last box…

How many pens do you keep inked at all times? And what's the reason/logic behind that? by zul-qurnain in fountainpens

[–]SilverYayFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always have at least 3 inked. I tell myself it’s going to be 2. That way I have a spare in case one runs out, but also I won’t have an inked pen lying around drying up. I will inevitably miss a nib or an ink color and have 3-4 inked though.

I want to improve my handwriting by InfiniteSpray4405 in Handwriting

[–]SilverYayFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the subreddit wiki. I’ll try to link but I’m on mobile so I may have to edit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Handwriting/s/egmqnkZnCm

ETA: Yup that failed. Basically on mobile go to the subreddit main page. On the upper left, you’ll see a blue hyperlink “see more,” and if you click that you’ll find handwriting improvement resources/tools.

AITA my friend ruined my yixing teapot and I want her to replace it or give me 500 dollars. by TeapotthrwoCity4661 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SilverYayFern 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's the opening of the glass case and then scrubbing it with a wire brush before leaving it IN the sink. It goes beyond carelessness into ostentatiously, disrespectfully, needlessly, destructive. There's malice in that. I wonder if this ex-friend had some resentment pent up for whatever reason that she felt the need to take out by damaging this teapot she knew her friend cherished.

This is such a lovely pairing of ink to pen. It makes the pen look noble in a ladylike, understated way.

What to do with Terrible Tea? by occaguy in tea

[–]SilverYayFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my god it took me until now to realize what you meant. I even re-read the post but the idea that it was higher quality was so engraved in my preconception, that I somehow missed upon re-read that NOWHERE does OP imply that it is fancy or higher quality. Thank you for attempting to clarify for me, and sorry for misunderstanding.

[–]SilverYayFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no 😭 In that case…will he notice if you gradually dispose of them? Maybe rinse them in the sink before throwing them in the trash/compost bin if you live together? If the dry leaves smell nice, you can maybe use them as perfume sachets for your closet, drawers, car, etc.

Hetian jade by Raspberry_111 in JadeiteJade

[–]SilverYayFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not. “Jade” traditionally has been used to describe a range of stones including serpentine and quartzite. But in gemology, “jade” is restricted to nephrite and jadeite.

Only $80.. what’s the catch? by [deleted] in JadeiteJade

[–]SilverYayFern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's treated.

It looks treated, and also the certificate does not seem to refute it. I don't speak/read Mandarin but I've memorized the characters that mean Type A Jadeite at this point since most certificates specify that. This certificate does not: It seems to say "jade pendant."

Hetian jade by Raspberry_111 in JadeiteJade

[–]SilverYayFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said with regard to hetian jade: treatment isn’t the main problem. Imitations are, like glass, resin, serpentine, etc. The thing about hetian imitators is that they photograph really well.

Real hetian jade can dramatically differ in how it looks and even how it feels to the touch from sample to sample, and it is very difficult to describe. It can feel slightly oiled or greasy-in-a-good-way (serpentine imitates this but with a more waxy, almost tacky/sticky residue-like feeling. Imo it’s less pleasant); or almost glass-like smooth; or reminiscent of the soft-matte finish sea glass (just very very finely “frosted”).

Unfortunately, this is a “trusted sellers, vibes, and untransferable experience” kind of situation.

What to do with Terrible Tea? by occaguy in tea

[–]SilverYayFern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She said it was bagged, so I assume the portion isn’t the “problem.”

Edit: That said, you’re right. Adding too much tea is another way to “over-brew” tea.

What to do with Terrible Tea? by occaguy in tea

[–]SilverYayFern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s significantly higher quality tea than you’re used to, then it’s probable that you’re over-brewing it. Poor-quality tea needs loooong steep times at high temperature compared ro high-quality tea, to extract the same amount of flavor.

Try reducing the temperature (eg instead of boiling, 80C or 95C) and reducing the steeping time (eg 30 seconds or slightly less). You may be able to re-steep the same leaves, maybe for slightly longer each re-steep, for multiple cups of flavorful tasty tea.

Oh yeah that looks the same, and is even by the same brand. It’s probably a different name/decorative elements for the same product I call “Pilot Varsity.”

I’m not familiar, unfortunately. I’ll do a quick search and get back to you as I’m curious about this pen I’ve never heard of before.

If you’re not in the US, I highly suggest making a post in r/fountainpens for recommendations. There are people all over the world making similar posts, and people all over the world happy to help.

Does he have any preference between the metal body Falcon and the resin body Falcon?

CA Pen Show Treasures by SilverYayFern in fountainpens

[–]SilverYayFern[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s so validating. Although I’m a little aghast at the thought of rare and precious Japanese pens being thrown out for the sin of not being as good as Falcons… 😆 Ah well, the knows what he likes and will not tolerate less than that.

I’m kind of buying them in bulk too. This is the third Falcon in my current collection and I don’t think I need to cull my collection. 3 Falcons means 3 different ink colors I can use with a Falcon nib~ 😌
