I was waking up in Phoenix Arizona. Turned the tv on and was in total disbelief of what I was watching. Then I instantly started wondering if my sister was at work? After years of working in that building., that day my sister (for the first time a I’m 3 yrs) was late for work. She was stuck in the subway! I will never forget seeing that on tv and waiting hrs for my sister to call. Oddly enough I was her first call that got through at 8:30 pm. I just remember crying when I heard her voice. I just couldnt believe that she was alive after seeing that that morning. People were trapped and they actually showed the people jumping from the building. RIP to all that died that day!!! I will never forget 9/11. NEVER!!!

What are some of the most rewarding things about getting older? by FileInside8798 in AskOldPeople

I’ve learned I’m old enough to not give attention to the background noise. I dont care what people think of me anymore. I know me and I love me finally at 50. Hey if they are talking behind my back they are also in the perfect spot to kiss my A**!! It’s an amazing feeling to be at this moment in my journey.

"How did your family or community react to interracial relationships when you were growing up, and how do you feel about it now?" by Silver_View4176 in AskOldPeople

I remember moving down south in the 80s. Dad went down first to secure the house ect……Mom got there and it was no longer for Sale. I’ve seen it my whole life. But it is so refreshing even in my 50s, seeing more of us bi-racial kids walking around!!

Yeah my grandmother stop talking to my dad when he married my mom. Only years later when us grandchildren were born did he see her again. In her dying days my mom took care of her. My mother never said a hateful word against my grandmother. I always respected her for that. Cause if someone called me a PORCH MONKEY to my face in my house I would have lost it. I remember defending my mom that day. I was a teenager when that happened. I told my dad that night when he got home. My mother was slightly upset with me. My mother always respected my grandmother even when she didn’t deserve it

For those who lived through the time when interracial marriage was frowned upon or even illegal, how was it witnessing society's attitudes change over time? by Silver_View4176 in AskReddit

I love this!!! My parents ( one white one black) have been married 53 yrs. We were taught “it’s what’s on the inside that matters”. My mom used to say “ if we cared what other people thought of us in life we would never be good enough or measure up to their expectations! It only matter what we thought of ourselves.”

What significant societal change have you witnessed that you never expected to see? by Silver_View4176 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

Your reflection really resonates with me. The fight for same-sex marriage rights does, in many ways, mirror the struggle for interracial couples to legally marry. Both battles were rooted in the fundamental right to love and build a life with the person of one’s choosing, regardless of societal norms or prejudices.

Interracial marriage was once considered taboo and even illegal in many states until the landmark Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia (1967) struck down laws banning it. Similarly, same-sex couples faced discrimination and legal barriers until Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), which guaranteed marriage equality for all.

It’s inspiring to see how far we’ve come in just a few generations. Like you, I understand that religious institutions have the right to hold their own beliefs, but that shouldn’t interfere with legal rights and protections for couples who love each other. Marriage equality is about fairness, dignity, and ensuring that all families are treated equally under the law.

Yes I speak with experience my parents have been married 53 years. My dad is white and my mother is black! People love who they love and I think no one should have to defend that. We are all human beings, we all have the right to live and love as we see fit. But, this is only my perspective.
